Today, we bring you the bowlers who took the most wickets in Border Gavaskar Trophy 2003-04. The season 5 of Border Gavaskar Trophy was played during December 4- January 6. Australia were the hosts, and India were in great form. Competitiveness was all over the series as the two teams scored level 1-1 for previous winners India to keep the trophy. Ricky Ponting & Rahul Dravid led the run-scoring for the two teams. Here we talk about cricketers who got the most wickets in Border Gavaskar Trophy 2003-04.
5. Brett Lee
The Australian Express Pace bowler was a key member of 3 or 4-member pace attack of the Kangaroo team. Lee picked 8 wickets from 4 innings of 2 test matches he played at an average of 59.50 in the fifth edition of Border Gavaskar Trophy. His strike rate was 75.6 and his best innings figures was 4/201, while match figures would be 4/201 from season. With these bowling statistics, Brett Lee featured in the list of Cricketers with the most wickets in Border Gavaskar Trophy 2003-04. Australia, without the services of Glenn McGrath & Shane Warne were not the same as you can find in the performance of their express pacer.
4. Jason Gillespie
The Australian Cricketer was known for his loopy swing bowling. Gillespie picked 10 wickets from 6 innings of 3 test matches at an average of 37.70 around in the fifth edition of Border Gavaskar Trophy. His strike rate was 83.5 and his best innings figures was 4/65, while match figures would be 4/82 from the season. With these bowling statistics, Jason Gillespie featured in the list of Cricketers with the most wickets in Border Gavaskar Trophy 2003-04.
3. Stuart MacGill
The Australian Leg Spinner, Stuart MacGill picked 14 wickets from 8 innings of 4 test matches at an average of 50 around. His strike rate was 83.4 and his best innings figures was 4/86, while match figures would be 5/138 from the season. Australian pitches wouldn’t offer much assistance to the spinner who would be one of the strike bowlers in absence of Shane Warne. With these bowling statistics, MacGill made to the list of Cricketers with the most wickets in Border Gavaskar Trophy 2003-04.
2. Ajit Agarkar
The Indian Pace bowler, Ajit Agarkar picked 16 wickets from 8 innings of 4 test matches at an average of 37 around in the fifth edition of Border Gavaskar Trophy. His strike rate was 58 and his best innings figures was 6/41, while match figures would be 8/160 from the season.
With these bowling statistics, Agarkar featured in the list of Cricketers with the most wickets in Border Gavaskar Trophy 2003-04. India had been a relatively inexperienced bowling line up after retirement of Javagal Srinath after ICC World Cup 2003. Agarkar & Kumble made it better for the Indian team in the series as they were able to get close to a series win down under.
1. Anil Kumble
The Bangalore born Legendary Indian Spinner would make the best out of the opportunities down under after missing the previous version in India against the Border Gavaskar Trophy rivals Australia. In the season 2003-04, Anil Kumble, picked 24 wickets from 8 innings of 4 test matches at an average of 29 around.
His strike rate was decimals over 51 and his best innings figures was 8/141, while match figures would be 12/279 from the season, as he took three 5 wicket hauls & a 10 wicket haul in the season. With these bowling statistics, Anil Kumble led the list of Cricketers with the most wickets in Border Gavaskar Trophy 2003-04. While these figures don’t look as good as Kumble in India, you can see the second best bowling by a spinner was 14 wickets by MacGill. Any other spinner couldn’t make any impression in the series.
These were the top wicket-takers in Border Gavaskar Trophy season 5. Sourav Ganguly led India would take their chances in the series as they could match inch by inch to the rivals at their home. It wouldn’t be fair to not mention that Steve Waugh led Australia missed McGrath & Warne, but then India was also under a less experienced pace bowling unit post Srinath & Prasad.
