Field Hockey is a sport played in 137 nations governed by the national sport federation.
These member association are governed by Fédération Internationale de Hockey (or FIH).
The sport as Olympic Competition was introduced in London in 1908 with England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as initial participants. Germany and France joined in to make it six teams’ competition.
Just after introduction at the London Games, the sport was dropped from the 1912 Stockholm Games. It was done after host nations were granted control over ‘optional sports’. The sport was re-introduced in 1920 in Antwerp before being omitted again in Paris in 1924.
Paul Léautey. M in 1924 founded FIH to control the sport and it was their efforts in 1928 that this sport was re-included in the Olympic Charter.
