Vijay Merchant
Indian Cricketer Vijaysingh Madhavji Merchant started century scoring for India at the Kennington Oval. India, under the Captaincy of Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, was on a tour to England in 1946. Merchant, on August 17, 1946, scored 128 and added 94 runs with Mushtaq Ali (59) at the top of the batting order in the first innings of the third test, at London.
With their partnership, India went on to score 331 in the first innings. The match was drawn but this innings got recorded in the list of first 9 Indians with Test 100 at the Oval Cricket Ground. Vijay Merchant would go on to score 3 centuries and 3 half centuries from his 10 match career.
Sunil Gavaskar
Former Indian Cricketer and Captain Sunil Manohar Gavaskar is recalled as the original Little Master of World Cricket. India, under Srinivas Venkataraghavan, was on a tour to England in 1979. Gavaskar, on September 4, 1979, scored 221 and took India to what could be among the greatest chase on a fifth day wicket as India would finish at 429 for 8, 9 runs behind this win.
Gavaskar added 213 for the first wicket with Chetan Chauhan (80) and 153 with Dilip Vengsarkar for the second wicket. By the time, he was out as the 4th wicket, he had India within 50 runs away from a legendary win. The match however resulted in a draw, but this innings got recorded in the list of first 9 Indians with Test 100 at the Oval Cricket Ground. Sunil Gavaskar would go on to score 34 centuries and create a list of milestones for the upcoming generations to achieve from.
Ravi Shastri
Indian Cricketer Ravishankar Jayadritha Shastri is recalled as one of the rare cricketers to feature at all positions in the batting order. India, under Mohammad Azharuddin, was on a tour to England in 1990. Shastri, on August 23, 1990, scored 187 as India would declare their innings at 606/9 in the first innings of the third test, at Kennington Oval.
This match was drawn as England scored 340 & 477/4 from the two innings. This innings featured in the list of first 9 Indians with Test 100 at the Oval Cricket Ground. Ravi Shastri would go on to score 11 centuries and 12 half centuries from his 80 match Test career.
Kapil Dev
Former Indian Cricketer and Captain Kapil Dev Ramlal Nikhanj is among the greatest cricketers to play for Indian Cricket team. India, under Mohammad Azharuddin was in England. Kapil, on August 24, 1990, scored 110 and added 110 runs with Ravi Shastri (187) & 74 runs with Kiran More as India moved from 6/368 to 8/552 in the first innings of the third test, at Kennington Oval.
The match resulted in a draw and this innings got listed among the first 9 Indians with Test 100 at the Oval Cricket Ground. Kapil Dev would go on to score 8 centuries and 27 half centuries from his 131 match career in addition to his 434 wickets.
Rahul Dravid
Former Indian Cricketer Rahul Sharad Dravid is recalled for his sublime technique, something that would help him perform in almost all conditions. India, under the Captain Sourav Ganguly, was on a tour to England in 2002. Dravid, on September 8, 2002, scored 217 and added 69 runs with Sanjay Bangar (21), 91 with Sachin Tendulkar (54), 105 runs with Ganguly (51), 113 with VVS Laxman (40) as well as 69 runs with Ajit Agarkar as India would finish at 508, at Kennington Oval.
With these partnership, India went on from 1/18 to 7/473 in the first innings. Dravid’s innings got recorded in the list of first 9 Indians with Test 100 at the Oval Cricket Ground. Rahul Dravid would go on to score another hundred at the ground in 2011, 146 not out in a lost case, though, in away becoming the first Indian to score two test hundreds at the Oval.
Anil Kumble
Former Indian Cricketer Anil Kumble is recalled for his stump to stump line and a good googly. India, under the Captain Rahul Dravid, was on a tour to England in 2007. Kumble, on August 10, 2007, scored 110 not out and added 91 runs with MS Dhoni (92) & 62 with Zaheer Khan (11) & 73 runs with Sreesanth as India would score 664 in their first innings in the third test, at Kennington Oval.
With these partnership, India went on from 6/417 to 10/664 in the first innings. Kumble’s innings got recorded in the list of first 9 Indians with Test 100 at the Oval Cricket Ground and the match went on to end in a draw. Anil Kumble would go on to score 5 half centuries also from his 132 match test career.
KL Rahul
Indian Cricketer Kannaur Lokesh Rahul would debut in test cricket in 2014. India, under Virat Kohli, was playing against hosts England in the 5th test of the test series in 2018. Rahul, on September 11, scored 149 runs adding 118 runs with Ajinkya Rahane and 204 runs with Rishabh Pant, at Kennington Oval. India finished at 345 in their innings, the second, against a target of 464, losing the match by 118 runs, but this innings featured in the list of first 9 Indians with Test 100 at the Oval Cricket Ground.
Rishabh Pant
Indian Cricketer Rishabh Rajendra Pant would debut in test cricket in 2014. India, under Virat Kohli, was playing against hosts England in the 5th test of the test series in 2018. Pant, on September 11, scored 114 runs adding 204 runs with KL Rahul in the same match Rahul scored his 149 in, at Kennington Oval in a lost cause, but this innings of Rishabh Pant featured in the list of first 9 Indians with Test 100 at the Oval Cricket Ground.
Rohit Sharma
Indian Cricketer Rohit Gurunath Sharma is known for his lazy elegance. India was playing against hosts England in the fourth test of the test series in 2021. Sharma & Rahul (46) added 83 runs for the opening wicket, and 153 runs with Pujara (61) was when Sharma scored his hundred (127) in the second innings of the match. India finished their second innings at 466, setting a target of 368 for the hosts, winning it by 157 runs. This innings got added in the list of first 9 Indians with Test 100 at the Oval Cricket Ground.
