Today we bring you the Cricketers who scored the most runs in Asia Cup 1997. The Pepsi Asia Cup was played during July 14–26, 1997, 7 matches were played in the tournament. This was the sixth edition of the continental cricket tournament run by Asian Cricket Council and was hosted by Sri Lanka. Four teams were part of the Asia Cup 1997 viz. India, Bangladesh, Pakistan & Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka won their 2nd title at the tournament & Venkatesh Prasad led the wickets table. Here we discuss the batsmen who hit the most runs in Asia Cup 1997.
5. Athar Ali Khan (Bangladesh)
Bangladesh batsman Athar Ali Khan scored 157 runs from the three matches he played in the tournament with an average of 52.33 and best score of 82 coming against Pakistan on July 16 at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. His runs would include a half-century, his highest and with this run aggregate, Khan featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1997.
In his best individual score innings’ match, Pakistan had batted first and they scored 319/5 from their 50 overs with Saeed Anwar’s 90, Inzamam-ul-Haq’s 77, Saleem Malik’s 62 & Ramiz Raja’s 52. Hasibul Hossain, Saiful Islam, Sheikh Salahuddin, Minhajul Abedin & Enamul Haque all took a wicket each. Bangladesh, in reply, were bowled out for 210 despite Athar’s 82 & Akram Khan’s 59. Saqlain Mushtaq took 5 while Aaqib Javed & Kabir Khan took 2 wickets each.
4. Mohammad Azharuddin (India)
Indian Middle Order batsman Mohammad Azharuddin scored 185 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an outstanding average of 185 and best score of 81 not out coming against Sri Lanka on July 18. His runs would include two fifties, albeit the same score, but one undefeated and with this run aggregate, Azharuddin featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1997.
Azhar was the highest scorer for the Indian team in the tournament. In his best innings score match, India had batted first and they scored 227/6 with Azhar’s 81 not out and Rahul Dravid’s 69. Chaminda Vaas & Sanath Jayasuriya took 2 wickets each. Sri Lanka chased down the target with 6 wickets remaining. Arjuna Ranatunga scored an unbeaten century.
3. Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka’s swashbuckling Opener Sanath Jayasuriya scored 204 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 51 and best score of 108 coming against Bangladesh on July 22. With this run aggregate, Jayasuriya featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1997. This was the only hundred Jayasuriya scored in the tournament and one of the only two hundreds in the tournament.
In his highest score innings match, Sri Lanka had batted first and scored 296/4 from their overs with century from Sanath, 51 from Arjuna Ranatunga and 60 from Marvan Atapattu. Bangladesh, in reply, could reach only 193/8 from 46 overs. Muttiah Muralitharan took 2, while Sajeewa de Silva, Aravinda de Silva & Upul Chandana took one wicket each.
2. Marvan Atapattu (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka’s top order batsman Marvan Atapattu scored 255 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 85 and best score of 84 not out coming against India on July 26. With this run aggregate, Marvan Samson Atapattu featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1997. His runs would include three fifties.
In his best score innings, India had batted first and scored 239/7 from their overs with Sachin Tendulkar’s 53 & Mohammad Azharuddin’s 81. Chaminda Vaas & Kumar Dharmasena took 2 wickets each while Muttiah Muralitharan & Sajeewa de Silva took one wicket each. Sri Lanka chased down the target with 8 wickets to spare. Marvan Atapattu (84 not out), Arjuna Ranatunga (62 not out) & Sanath Jayasuriya (63) were the scorers for the Sri Lankan team.
1. Arjuna Ranatunga (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka’s middle order batsman & the most celebrated captain Arjuna Ranatunga scored 272 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 136 and best score of 131 not out coming against India on July 18 in a successful chase in the third match of this tournament. With this run aggregate, Ranatunga led the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1997.

It was a round robin format tournament at group stage with the four teams playing against one another and then the top 2 would go to tournament final to fight out for the trophy.
