Tokyo Olympics are the thirty second edition of the Summer Olympic & Paralympic Games which were initially scheduled in 2020 but the global pandemic Corona got it postponed by a year almost. The rescheduled edition is planned during July 23- August 8. Here are a few things about Bhavani Devi that you may not know about her:
Born & Family
Bhavani Devi was born on August 27, 1993 at Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu State of India. Her full name is Chadalavada Anandha Sundhararaman Bhavani Devi. Bhavani Devi’s father C Anandha Sundhararaman is a priest while her mother CA Ramani was a housewife. Bhavani is the fifth child of her parents; she has two elder brothers and sisters. About Bhavani Devi’s Career
Bhavani Devi picked Fencing in 2004 at her school as one of six sport options that she had to take a sport from. Three years later, at the age of 14, she appeared in her first international tournament, Cadet and Junior World Fencing Championship 2007 at Turkey. Bhavani Devi appears for India in Sabre Fencing, which is one of the three disciplines of modern fencing.
She won bronze at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships 2009 at Malaysia, that was her first achievement out of many she’d add to her career and profile. She’d go on to win Bronze at the International Open 2010 at Thailand, Bronze at the Cadet Asian Championship 2010 at Philippines, Bronze at the Asian Championship 2010 at Philippines, Silver and Bronze medals at the Commonwealth Championship 2012 at Jersey, Silver at the Asian Championship 2014 at Philippines, Bronze at the Under-23 Asian Championship 2015 at Ulaanbaatar & Bronze at the Flemish Open hosted by Belgium.
Bhavani would further add a Sabre World Cup Gold to her kitty in 2017, gold medal at the Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2018, silver and bronze at the Tournoi Satellite Fencing Competition 2019, gold medal at the Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2019.
Her Indian Team Coach is Sagar Lagu while Nicola Zanotti is her personal coach. This was a brief about Bhavani Devi’s sports career. Among the well-educated Indian Sportspersons, Bhavani Devi is an MBA from St Joseph’s Engineering College in Chennai. While US Olympian Mariel Zagunis is her idol from the sport, she drives her inspirations from achievements of Sania Mirza and Serena Williams, among the many women’s achievers.
About Bhavani Devi’s Rare Records
Widely known as the first Indian Fencer to win Gold Medal for India, here are a few achievements she was the first Indian to add to her profile:
1. The first Indian to win silver medal at the Under 23 Asian Championship 2014 hosted at Philippines.
2. The first Indian to win a gold medal at the Senior Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2018 at Australia.
3. The first Indian to win gold medal at the Sabre World Cup 2017 at Reykjavik, Iceland.
4. The first Indian to enter the top 50 of World Rankings in fencing.
5. In March 2021, she became the first Indian Fencer to qualify for the Olympic Games.
