Asian Championships bronze medalists Davinder Singh Kang continued his fine run as he raced to victory in the men’s javelin event at the 57th National Open Athletics Championships on Tuesday. While, Mohammed Sadath of Services and Tamil Nadu’s S Archana won the 100 metres dash for men and women in their respective events.
Sadath who had been performing well for Services beat second placed Elakkiyadasan of Tamil Nadu by 0.5 seconds. He clocked 10.565 just ahead of Elakkiyadasan’s 10.570 seconds. Vidya Sagar another sprinter from Services won the bronze medal with a time of 10.60.

In the women’s sprint, Archana comfortably won the gold medal as she clocked 11.78 seconds which was well ahead of 11.92 seconds of Chandra Lekha, who belonged from the same state. Karnataka’s Prajna S Prakash finished third in the podium.
2017 World Championships finalists Davinder Kang of Services clinched the gold medal with a throw of 75.12 metres. Meanwhile, Abhishek Singh (Kang’s teammate in Services) just missed the gold with a throw of 74.19 m and had to settle for the silver medal. Sunil Bishnoi of Punjab finished won the bronze.

Kang, Who had been in the news recently after threatening a move to Italy because of little or no support from the federation, was not at his usual best in the hot and humidity of Chennai. However, lived up to the billing as the favorite in the absence of national record holder Need an Chopra.
Jitu Baby of Services clinched the gold in the 400 metres run, clocking 47.08 seconds. While, Mohan Kumar of ONGC and Haryana’s Ravinder took the second and third places respectively.

S E Shamsheer of Railways won gold in the long jump event. He recorded 7.74 on his fourth attempt, to win. It was an excellent performance from someone who finished ninth in the final qualification round of the long jump.
Abhishek Shetty of Railways won gold in the decathlon event with a total of 6,835 points, while Amolak Singh and Dayaram, both of Services finished second and third respectively.

In the women’s shot put, Navjeet Kaur of Railways earned victory with an effort of 15.23 metres. However, It was way below the national record of 17.96 meters achieved by Manpreet Kaur in Kolkata two years ago. Kachnar Chaudhary of ONGC and Rakhi Sangwan (Haryana) came second and third in the event.
Just like the opening day, athletes of Services and Railways continued to dominate in the Second day of the National Athletics Championsbips in Chennai.
