Recall the Rio Olympics for sportsmanship of Nikki Hamblin. In next four day Olympic 2016 will be over, there will be many records made, broken, medals and glory retained. Countries who won their first medals, first gold medals, athletes who failed dope test, who cleared dope test, made history, underdogs as winner, lot to talk after Olympics.
But what will be your story that you want to remember forever. When someone will ask you 20 years later what was your Olympic story what will you tell them?

Here is my Olympic story where I watched true sportsmanship shared between two unknown athletes. It was New Zealand’s Nikki Hamblin who encouraged American Abbey D’Agostino to finish women’s 5000m heat despite a fall.
Hamblin who suffered similar fall at the World Championships knew how hard it is for someone to get up again and run to finish line.

Both the athletes knew their chances were short to finish line, the pair were last over the line with Hamblin finishing 16.43.61 and D’Agostino finishing at 17.10.02. Before this race both athletes were strangers to each other but now there is a bond for forever of sportsmanship and love.
There has been several such instances in the field of sports but Olympics is something different where everyone is hungry for medal and glory but there are only few who care more than medal and glory.

There is another story of Derek Redmond whose video you must have seen in YouTube. Derek was favorite to win the track event in Barcelona Olympics where he posted the fastest time in the first round and went into the semi-final round. Before the 250m from the finish line, his hamstring tore.
He fell on the ground in pain, stretcher bearers made their way when his father Jim barged in from security on the track to get his son move on. As father and son crossed the finish line the crowd of 65,000 spectators rose to give standing ovation. As Derek Barcelona Olympics records state that he – did not finish the race, the glory was beyond winning the race or medal.

Olympics are not just a game, it’s a symbol of peace and care that is shown by more than 10,000 athletes from more than 200 countries. It is the ground to make friends which is bigger than making records, it is the place to develop bond with different religion, cast, color and nations. It is the place to break the barrier of, jumping over , sailing into, diving for, running towards the goal of humanity.
