Today we bring you the Cricketers who picked the most wickets in Asia Cup 2010. The Asia Cup was played during Jun 15-24 at Dambulla, Sri Lanka, with four teams participating including the hosts, and round robin matches were played to decide the top 2 who would go on to play the tournament final. India & Sri Lanka played the tournament final with India winning their fifth title. Pakistani Batsman Shahid Afridi led the batting cards. 5. Farveez Maharoof (Sri Lanka)
The Sri Lanka All-Rounder debuted in ODI in 2004. Mohamed Farveez Maharoof took 5 wickets from the three matches he played at an average of 27.20. With these wickets, Maharoof featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2010 . His best was 5/42 against India on June 22. Batting first, India were bowled out for 209 despite Rohit Sharma’s 69, MS Dhoni’s 41 & Dinesh Karthik’s 40. Maharoof took 5, while Herath took 2 & Angelo Mathews took one. Sri Lanka chased down the target with 7 wickets remaining.
4. Praveen Kumar (India)
The Meerut born Indian Medium Pacer debuted in ODI in 2007. Praveen Kumar would pick 6 wickets from the four matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2010 at an average of 25. With these wickets, Praveen featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2010. His best was 3/53 against arch-rivals Pakistan on June 19. Pakistan had batted first and scored 267 with Salman Butt‘s 74 & Kamran Akmal’s 51. Praveen took 3, Zaheer Khan took 2, Harbhajan Singh took 2 while Ravindra Jadeja took 1. India chased down the target with 3 wickets remaining. Gautam Gambhir scored 83 & Captain MS Dhoni scored 56.
3. Zaheer Khan (India)
The Left-arm medium fast bowler started his ODI career in 2000. Zaheer Khan would pick 6 wickets from the four matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2010 at an average of 24.66. With these wickets, Zaheer featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2010. His best was 2/36 against Sri Lanka in the tournament final, the same match where Nehra got 4. India won the match and their 5th Asia Cup title.
2. Ashish Nehra (India)
The Indian Left-arm medium pacer was known for his natural swing bowling since his ODI debut in 2001. Ashish Nehra would pick 6 wickets from the three matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2010 at an average of 21. With these wickets, Nehra featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2010. His best was 4/40 against Sri Lanka on June 24 in the tournament final. India had batted first and scored 268/6 with Dinesh Karthik’s 66, Rohit Sharma’s 41 & Skipper MS Dhoni’s 38. Sri Lanka, in reply, were bowled out for 187. Chamara Kapugedera scored 55 not out while Zaheer Khan & Ravindra Jadeja took 2 each, apart from 4 wicket haul of Nehra.
1. Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka)
The Sri Lanka Medium Pacer debuted in ODI in 2004. Separamadu Lasith Malinga would pick 9 wickets from the three matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2010 at an average of 14. With these wickets, Malinga led the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2010. His best was 5/34 against Pakistan on June 15 in the tournament opener. Batting first, Sri Lanka scored 242/9 with Mahela Jayawardene’s 54, Angelo Mathews’ 55 not out & Captain Kumar Sangakkara‘s 42. Pakistan, in reply, were bowled out for 226. Apart from Malinga, Angelo Mathews took 2, while Muralitharan took 1.
Only two bowlers took 5-wickets haul, both Sri Lankan, Malinga & Maharoof made to the top 5. These were the top wicket-takers of ACC Asia Cup 2010. The four teams that participated in Asia Cup 2010 were India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh. India won the tournament title under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
