The Pepsi Asia Cup was played during July 14–26, 1997 in Sri Lanka, with four teams participating including the hosts, teams were in one group and round robin matches would decide the top 2 who would go on to play the the tournament final. 5. Chaminda Vaas (Sri Lanka)
The Wattala born left arm fast bowler would go on to become one of the greatest medium pace bowlers from Sri Lanka. Warnakulasuriya Patabendige Ushantha Joseph Chaminda Vaas would pick 5 wickets from the three matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 1997 at an average of 19.40. With these wickets, Vaas featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1997.
His best was 2/32 against India on July 26 at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. India had batted first and scored 239/7 from their overs with Mohammad Azharuddin’s 81 not out & Sachin Tendulkar’s 53. Vaas & Kumar Dharmasena took 2-wickets each. Sri Lanka chased down the target to win the match by 8 wickets.
4. Robin Singh (India)
The Indian all-rounder Robindra Ramnarine Singh made his ODI debut in 1989. Robin Singh would pick 5 wickets from the four matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 1997 at an average of 13.60. With these wickets, Singh featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1997. His best was 3/13 against Bangladesh on July 24, as Indians stopped the Bangladesh team to 130/8 while bowling first in a 43 over match. Venkatesh Prasad, Abey Kuruvilla, Anil Kumble & Sachin Tendulkar took a wicket each. India won the match by 9 wickets as Sourav Ganguly scored 73 not out in this chase.
3. Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka)
The Matara born Sri Lankan all-rounder would go on to become one of the legendary figures of Sri Lanka Cricket. Sanath Teran Jayasuriya would go on to pick 6 wickets from the four matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 1997 at an average of 24.50. With these wickets, Jayasuriya featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1997. His best was 4/49 against Pakistan in the 1st match of this tournament on July 14. Sri Lanka had batted first and were bowled out for 239 despite Marvan Atapattu‘s 80. All Pakistani bowlers took wicket, led by Kabir Khan who took 2 wickets, while others took 1 wicket each.
2. Saqlain Mushtaq (Pakistan)
The Pakistani off-break bowler would go on to become one of the legendary spinners of the World Cricket. Saqlain Mushtaq took 6 wickets from the three matches he played at an average of 12.66. With these wickets, Mushtaq featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1997 . His best was 5/38 against Bangladesh on July 16, in the second match of the tournament. Batting first, Pakistan made 319/5 with Saeed Anwar’s 90, Inzamam-ul-Haq’s 77, Saleem Malik’s 62 and Ramiz Raja’s 52. Bangladesh, in reply, were bowled out for 210 despite Athar Ali Khan’s 82 & Akram Khan’s 59. Saqlain took 5, while Aaqib Javed & Kabir Khan took 2 wickets each.
1. Venkatesh Prasad (India)
The Bengaluru born Indian Medium Pacer debuted in ODI in 1994. Bapu Krishnarao Venkatesh Prasad would pick 7 wickets from the four matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 1997 at an average of 17. With these wickets, Prasad led the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1997. His best was 4/29 against arch-rivals Pakistan in a match that wouldn’t even have one team completing their innings. Pakistan were 30/5 from 9 overs when the match was abandoned.
Only two bowlers took 4-wickets haul while one bowler took 5-wickets haul in the tournament. These were the top wicket-takers, the ones who made the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1997.
