Today we bring you the Cricketers who scored the most runs in Champions Trophy 2006. The 2006 ICC KnockOut Trophy was played during October 7- November 5, 2006; 15 matches were played in the tournament. This was the fifth edition of the ‘mini’ Cricket World Cup run by ICC and the edition was hosted by India. Ten teams were part of the 2006 ICC KnockOut Trophy viz. India, Pakistan, South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia, West Indies, Bangladesh , Zimbabwe & Sri Lanka. Australia won their first ICC Champions Trophy title. 5. Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka batsman Denagamage Praboth Mahela de Silva Jayawardene scored 188 runs from the six matches he played in the tournament with an average of 37.60 and best score of 48 coming against New Zealand on Oct 20 at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. With this run aggregate, Jayawardene featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Champions Trophy 2006. New Zealand had batted first & were bowled out for 165 with Muttiah Muralitharan picking 4 & Lasith Malinga scalping 2. Sri Lanka chased down the target and won by 7 wickets; Upul Tharanga scored 56 while Captain Jayawardene scored 48.
4. Shivnarine Chanderpaul (West Indies)
West Indies Left hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored 222 runs from the seven matches he played in the tournament with an average of 55.50 and best score of 57 not out coming against South Africa on November 2 in the second semifinal hosted at Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur. With these runs & 3 fifties, Chanderpaul featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Champions Trophy 2006. Batting first, South Africa had scored 258/8 with Herschelle Gibbs‘ 77 & AB de Villiers‘ 46. Jerome Taylor, Dwayne Bravo & Marlon Samuels picked two wickets each. Chris Gayle scored 133 not out & Shivnarine Chanderpaul was the second highest scorer in a successful chase as West Indies would win the match by 6 wickets.
3. Damien Martyn (Australia)
Australian batsman Damien Richard Martyn scored 241 runs from the five matches he played in the tournament with an outstanding average of 80.33 and best score of 78 coming against England on October 21. With this run aggregate & 2 fifties, Martyn featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Champions Trophy 2006. In his highest score innings match, England were bowled out for 169 after they were put into bat first. Mitchell Johnson & Shane Watson took 3 wickets each, while Glenn McGrath took 2. Australia chased down the target and won by six wickets with Martyn’s score and 32 not out of Michael Hussey.
2. Upul Tharanga (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka Opening Batsman Warushavithana Upul Tharanga would score 320 runs from the six matches he played in the tournament with an average of 53.33 and best score of 110 coming against Zimbabwe on October 10 at Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad. With this run aggregate and two hundreds & a fifty, Tharanga featured in the top 5 list of most runs in Champions Trophy 2006. In his best score match, Sri Lanka had scored 285/7 with his hundred and Kumar Sangakkara‘s 80. Zimbabwe, on their chase, were bowled out for 141. Malinga struck 3 while Fernando & Muralitharan took 2 wickets each.

1. Chris Gayle (West Indies)
Windies Opening Batsman Chris Gayle scored 474 runs from the eight matches he played in the tournament with an average of 79 and best score of 133 not out coming against South Africa in the same match which saw Chanderpaul scoring his tournament best runs in a West Indies win. This was apparently the highest individual score of the ICC Champions Trophy 2006. Gayle scored 3 hundreds, only batsman to do so, as he would score the most runs in Champions Trophy 2006.
These were the top scorers in the fifth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy, in 2006, the ones who made to the top 5 list of most runs in Champions Trophy 2006. It was a KnockOut tournament with 10 teams with Zimbabwe & Bangladesh getting eliminated in the qualifying round and remaining 8 teams were divided in two groups of 4 members each with each member team playing round robin matches against each other and top two teams of the two groups would progress to the semifinals and then the winning 2 would go to tournament final to fight out for the trophy.
