Merchant, on July 28, 1936, scored 114 and added 203 runs with Mushtaq Ali (112) at the top of the batting order & 76 with Cotar Ramaswami (60) in the second innings of the second test, at Manchester. With their partnership, India went on to score 390/5 in the innings to draw the test match. The match was drawn but this innings got recorded in the list of first 8 Indians with Test 100 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground.
Mushtaq Ali
Indian Cricketer Syed Mushtaq Ali is recalled as the cricketer who scored the first overseas test century for India. And this happened exactly a day before when Vijay Merchant scored his century in the same match against England in 1936. Ali, on July 27, 1936, scored 112 as India would draw match against the hosts. This innings got recorded in the list of first 8 Indians with Test 100 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground.
Abbas Ali Baig
Indian Cricketer from Hyderabad, Abbas Ali Baig is recalled as one of the glamor boys of Indian Cricket. India, under Datta Gaekwad, went on a tour to England in 1959. Baig, on July 28, 1959, scored 112 as India would finish 172 runs short of target of 548 set by the hosts, at Manchester. This innings got recorded in the list of first 8 Indians with Test 100 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. Abbas Ali Baig would go on to score 2 half centuries also from his 10 match Test career.
Polly Umrigar
Indian Cricketer Pahlan Ratanji Umrigar is recalled as the first double centurion for India in test cricket. India went on a tour to England in 1959 and in the fourth test against the host, Polly would score 118 runs in the second innings in the same innings that Abbas Ali Baig got his hundred. This innings got added in the list of first 8 Indians with Test 100 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. Polly Umrigar would go on to score 12 centuries and 14 half centuries from his 59 match Test career.
Sunil Gavaskar
Former Indian Cricketer and the original Little Master of World Cricket was part of the Indian Cricket team, under Ajit Wadekar, that went on a tour to England in 1974. Gavaskar, on June 8, 1974, scored 101 and added 73 runs with Gundappa Viswanath (40) as India would finish their first innings of the first match at 246 against 328/9 of the hosts. India would go on to lose this match but Sunny Gavaskar’s innings got added on to the list of first 8 Indians with Test 100 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground.
Sandeep Patil
Former Indian Cricketer Sandeep Madhusudan Patil is often recalled as a hard-hitting middle order batter of Indian Cricket team. India, under Sunil Gavaskar was in England in 1982. Patil, on June 27, scored 129 not out and added 96 runs with Kapil Dev (65) & 97 runs with Madan Lal as India moved from 6-173 to 8/379 in the first innings of the second test, at Manchester. The match resulted in a draw and this innings got listed him among the first 8 Indians with Test 100 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. Sandeep Patil would go on to score 4 centuries and 7 half centuries from his 29 match career.
Mohammad Azharuddin
Former Indian Cricketer & Captain Mohammad Azharuddin is recalled for his awesome wristwork. India, under him, was on a tour to England in 1990. Azhar, on August 11, scored 179 and added 189 runs with Sanjay Manjrekar (93), 112 with Sachin Tendulkar (68) as India would finish at 432 in their first innings of second test, at Manchester.
With these partnership, India went on from 3/57 to 5/358 in the first innings. Azhar’s innings got recorded in the list of first 8 Indians with Test 100 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. Mohammad Azharuddin would go on to score 22 hundreds & 21 fifties in his career of 99 test match.
Sachin Tendulkar
Former Indian Cricketer and the most popular cricketer of yesteryears Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar was also part of the Indian Cricket team in the 1990 series against England. Tendulkar, on August 14, scored 119 not out, his second fifty plus score of the match as he took India to within 66 runs from their overseas win, at Manchester. Sachin’s innings listed him among the first 8 Indians with Test 100 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. Sachin would go on to make one record after another for next two decades to finish as the highest scorer in both test and ODI cricket.
