Mumbai: Mali, the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup runners-up will look look to begin their campaign on high when they face Paraguay in the second match of Group B at the DY Patil stadium on Friday.
Although making just their fifth appearance in the world Cup, Mali have a record of reaching the quarter-finals at least three times out of total four, with the 2015 runners-up trophy their highest achievement. Paraguay on the other hand was the only team that held a rampant Brazil to a draw in the South American U-17 Championships and eventually finished third in the competition. They are making their fourth appearance in the World Cup and will look to take a step more than the quarter-finals they reached in 1999.
Considered to be a dark-horse of the tournament Mali, in the absence of champions Nigeria is a title contender this year. One of the most balanced team in the tournament, the African nation is equally strong on both attack and defence. But Paraguay coach Gustavo Morinigo, says his team is adequately prepared to challenge the 2015 runners-up.
“We know Mali is a strong team. They are one of the favorites to win the tournament. We respect that, but we are also well prepared,” said Morinigo.
While striker Martin Sanchez will be the main man for Paraguay, it will not be an easy task for him to score against Mali goalie Youssof Koita, who is considered to be one of the best teenage goalkeepers. A David de Gea fan Koita has incredible penalty saving abilities, which was visible in the match against Guinea where he saved four penalties.
Los Guaranies captain and defender Roberto Fernandez will be another player for Paraguay to watch for while Malinké forward Hadje Drame who already has few top European clubs as his suitors will be constant threat for Paraguay defence upfront.
