Mumbai: Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal not just highlighted Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat’s achievements but also created a fan following from them. There was a time when not many knew about the sisters but now the country sees them with hope, hope of winning golds and silvers for the country.
And thus Babita Phogat’s match was something that everyone looked forward too. The expectations were high when Babita walked on the mat of Pro Wrestling League 2. All eyes were on the Haryana girl when she came in for her first bout, at the KD Jadav Indoor stadium, New Delhi on Wednesday.
And disappointing her fans, UP Dangal Wrestler lost to World and European Champion Sofia Mattsson in just 46 seconds in the 53-kg category.
Rio Olympic bronze medallist, Sofia Mattsson, took a 4-0 lead within the first 30 seconds. In the next 16 seconds, Mattsson gained another 2 points to win the game from technique superiority. Mattsson thus won the fourth bout for team out of seven.
Babita’s team eventually lost to Haryana Hammers by 2-5 even after a tie.
The sisters were the part of the promotion campaign of the film too and a lot of media houses did special features on the two and also on the entire Phogat Family.
With an increase in her twitter followers, Babita had also tweeted to her fans to come and support her post her Dangal fame but the game turned into a mere dismay.
Babita’s elder sister, the other star, Geeta Phogat who also represents UP Dangal is all set to take on Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik, representing Delhi Sultans in the latter stages of the tournament. This surely will be a match India will wait for, because it will be our best versus our best.
What future holds for the duo is something no one knows, but they are definitely in the field to stay and bounce back.
