Today we bring you the Cricketers who picked the most wickets in Asia Cup 2000. The Pepsi Asia Cup was played during May 29- June 7, 2000 in Bangladesh, with four teams participating including the hosts, teams were in one group and round robin matches would decide the top 2 who would go on to play the the tournament final. Pakistan & Sri Lanka played the tournament final with Pakistan winning their first Asia Cup title. Pakistan Batsman Mohammad Yousuf led the batting cards of the tournament edition. 5. Wasim Akram (Pakistan)
The Lahore born left arm fast bowler would go on to become one of the greatest fast bowlers from Asia. Wasim Akram would pick 4 wickets from the three matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2000 at an average of 20.25. With these wickets, Akram featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2000. His best was 2/38 against Sri Lanka on June 7. Pakistan had batted first and scored 277/4 in the match from their overs. Sri Lanka couldn’t chase the target, thanks to some great bowling from Akram, Mohammad Akram & Arshad Khan with each one of these three taking 2 wickets. Pakistan won the match by 39 runs.
4. Arshad Khan (Pakistan)
The Pakistan off break bowler debuted in ODIs in 1993. Arshad Khan would pick 5 wickets from the four matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2000 at an average of 28. With these wickets, Khan featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2000. His best was 2/42 against Sri Lanka on June 7, the same match Wasim Akram and Mohammad Akram also took two wickets. Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka by 39 runs.
3. Ajit Agarkar (India)
The Mumbai born Indian Medium Pace bowler started his ODI career in 1998. Agarkar would go on to pick 5 wickets from the three matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2000 at an average of 27.80. With these wickets, Ajit Bhalchandra Agarkar featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2000. His best was 2/47 against arch-rivals Pakistan in the 5th match of the tournament on June 3. Pakistan, who had batted first, scored 295/7 with Mohammad Yousuf 100 not out. Agarkar & Amit Bhandari took two wickets while Kumble took 3 wickets. India couldn’t chase the target of 296 and lost the match by 44 runs.
2. Azhar Mahmood (Pakistan)
The Pakistan All-rounder made his ODI debut in 1996. Azhar Mahmood took 5 wickets from the four matches he played at an average of 21.20. With these wickets, Mahmood featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2000 . His best was 3/24 against Sri Lanka on June 5, in the sixth match of the tournament. Batting first, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 192 despite Marvan Atapattu‘s 62 and Upul Chandana’s 46. Mahmood took 3 while Shabbir Ahmed & Shahid Afridi took a wicket each. Pakistan won the match by 7 wickets with Mohammad Yousuf scoring 90 not out.
1. Abdul Razzaq (Pakistan)
The Lahore born Pakistani Medium Pacer debuted in ODI in 1996. Abdul Razzaq would pick 8 wickets from the three matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2000 at an average of 9.25. With these wickets, Razzaq led the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2000. His best was 4/29 against arch-rivals India in the same match when Ajit Agarkar took his best of the Asia Cup 2000. India would go on to lost the match by 44 runs in a 296 run chase.
Only one bowler took 4-wickets haul while 5 bowlers took 3-wicket hauls in the tournament. These were the top wicket-takers, the ones who made the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2000.
