The recently concluded season 2019 has been one of the most exciting Womens tennis seasons in recent years. Many surprising moments were witnessed both in Grand Slam matches as well as other tournaments bringing out some shocking upsets and unexpected winners. We look back at the 5 female players who won most matches in the WTA season of 2019.
5. Sofia Kenin
The 21 year old American tennis star was one of the standout players of the year 2019. Kenin won 49 matches in the year and improved her ranking from outside top 50 to inside the top 15. She rose to a career high ranking of World Number 12 in October 2019 and finished the year at World Number 14.
Kenin won 3 singles titles in the year 2019 which included the Hobart International tournament, Mallorca Open and the Guangzhou Women’s Open. Kenin is expected to breakthrough into the top 10 in the year 2020 and also raise her game at the Grand Slam level where she has never gone beyond the 4th round.
4. Belinda Bencic
The Swiss starlet who turned pro in 2012 had one of the best years of her young career in 2019. Bencic also started the season outside the top 50 in 2019. The talented Swiss however won 49 matches in 2019 and carved her way to finish the year at World Number 8. Bencic won the Dubai Open in February 2019 in a heroic fashion defeating 4 top 10 players on her way to lift the title.
Bencic also managed to reach the 1st Grand Slam semi-final of her career at the US Open in 2019 only to be defeated by the eventual champion Bianca Andreescu. Bencic would be aiming to go one step ahead in the year 2020 by following the footsteps of her idol Martina Hingis and becoming the 2nd Swiss woman to lift a Grand Slam trophy.

3. Karolína Plíšková
The former World Number 1 from the Czech Republic finished the year 2019 at World Number 2. Pliskova won 52 matches in 2019 at the cost of 27 defeats. The Czech star won the titles at Italian Open and Eastbourne International in 2019 but was unable to win a Slam.
Her best Grand Slam performance came at the Australian Open where she managed to reach the Semi-final eventually getting beaten at the hands of the eventual champion Naomi Osaka. Pliskova has now been a Grand Slam semifinalist twice and finalist once in 2016 US Open. In 2020 she would be trying hard to become a champion at the Grand Slam level.
2. Kiki Bertens
2019 proved to be one of the best years in the career of this Dutch star. Bertens won 55 matches in 2019 placing her in the 2nd position in the leader board after Ashleigh Barty of Australia. Bertens achieved many new things in 2019. She rose to the career high rankings of World Number 4 and also won her 1st premier title at the Madrid Open. Bertens was also successful at the St. Petersburg ladies Open in February 2019.
Kiki played 81 matches in 2019, the most by any WTA singles player. The Dutch starlet would be hoping to carry her 2019 form to season 2020 and finally achieve a Grand Slam break as well as aim at the World Number 1 rankings as she has finished 2019 inside the top 10.
1. Ashleigh Barty
The talented Australian was truly the WTA best player of 2019. Barty won the French Open, became World Number 1 and finished the year as World Number 1 as well as won the WTA finals at Shenzhen in 2019. Barty was also named at the WTA player of the year. The Queensland star won 56 matches in 2019, the most by any female player in the year.
Barty is a strong favourite in her home Slam of the Australian Open in 2020. She has been showing great potential on the hard courts making her a strong contender at the US Open also. However it remains to be seen how the gritty Australian plays on the lawns of Wimbledon where she lost in the 4th round in 2019.
