Kolkata: Former I-League champions Mohun Bagan have come up with a big signing in the transfer market as they have roped in former FC Porto midfielder Diogo Alexandre Alves Ferreira for the upcoming domestic football season.
However he is yet to pass a medical test in Kolkata upon whose completion, he would pen down a professional contract with the Mariners. He has represented Australia at the U-23 level and also has an experience of playing in the A-League (Australian League) from 2010-2016. Currently, he represents Penang FC in the Malaysian Super Liga.
Earlier in his career, he was included in FC Porto’s youth academy after he passed the trials. During his stay in Portugal, he played for a second division side on loan.
He returned to Green Gully in Australia, his childhood club when he was 18 and then he was signed for the youth team of Melbourne Victory in the National Youth League. Playing a crucial role for the club for two seasons, he gained a promotion to the senior team of the club.
He made his debut for Melbourne Victory in their 1-0 win over Kawasaki Frontale in the Asian Champions League. In 2010, he signed a contract with Melbourne Victory and got his first start soon after against Wellington Phoenix. His first goal in the A-League came in a winning cause against Central Coast Mariners.
However after the 2012-2013 season, he was released by Melbourne Victory along with teammates Tando Velaphi, Spase Dilevski and Sam Gallagher. He had made 52 appearances for the club.
He was then signed by Brisbane Roar for a one-year deal along with former Sydney FC midfielder Dimitri Petratos.
He then went on to sign for Perth Glory in 2014. He would undoubtedly be a big addition to the Mohun Bagan side who have lost their key players to the ISL franchises.
