Edmonton: Hosts Canada and Japan lead the standings in the Ford World Men’s Curling Championship 2017, in the Northlands Coliseum, Edmonton Canada.
After three sessions of play they are in joint first place with two wins from two. In the third session, on Sunday (2 April) morning, there were only two games.
Netherlands, who had lost their Saturday opener in an extra end against Germany, faced Japan, already with a win under their belt, while Canada faced Russia in the other game.
After seven ends of the game between Japan and Netherlands the teams were tied at 5-5, when Netherlands skip Jaap Van Dorp drew his last stone into the house for two points.
In the eighth end Japan’s Morozumi cleared out two Dutch stones and when the dust had settled, Japan had scored four points for a 9-5 lead. The Dutch did manage to score one point in the ninth end to reduce Japan’s lead to 9-6, but they conceded the game after that.
Hosts Canada had been pushed all the way by Switzerland before they won their Saturday opening game, but against Russia in this session, it was a different story.
In the fourth end, Gushue hit out a Russian stone but managed to keep his own stone within the rings to score two points from the end and move his team’s lead to 8-2. Gushue then brought the game to its conclusion in the sixth end with a hit to score three points and win the game with a final score of 11-3.

Yusuke Morozumi; skip, Japan (after 9-6 win over Netherlands): “That was a good game. That was a good shot for four in the eighth and if you make a great shot like that you always feel good. Now we’ve got momentum but now we need to get ready for the next game.”
Brad Gushue; skip, Canada (after 11-3 win over Russia): “I think it’s a bit of a confidence boost after yesterday the first five ends we struggled pretty bad and I think after the last 11 ends we’ve been playing pretty good.”
