Mumbai: One of the spearheads of the pace bowling department in Virat Kohli’s scheme of things wouldn’t have thought in his worst of nightmares that a picture posted on Facebook would have him trolled. The Bengal seamer posted a picture with his wife and that lands him in trouble. Remarks that are controversial welcomed him. Now, what was his fault?
Mohammed Shami posed with his wife! But the so-called frequent users of Facebook have taken him on because Shami’s wife was not ‘properly dressed.’ The Facebook and Twitter handles of Shami, showed the picture of Mr. and Mrs. Shami, accompanied by the words “beautiful moments”. However, a segment of society, encompassing his fans too, pointed fingers and trolled Mrs. Shami’s choice of outfit. In the name of religion, some users notified him to “follow Islam” and “ensure that she wears the hijab and modest clothes”.
Some people commented that the cricketer should be “shameful” for”allowing his wife to wear revealing clothes”. And here is one of the comments: “Shame on you. As a Muslim, keep your wife in purdah [covered clothing]. Learn from others.”
And Shami hit back! “Not everyone get what they desire, only a lucky few get it. They are my wife and daughter and I know what I should do. We should all look inwards,” the pacer tweeted on Monday. Many a star bearing personalities expressed their criticism towards people for posting “shameful comments” on Shami’s social media accounts.
Former India batsman, Mohammad Kaif, exhibited his support bytweeting, “The comments are really really Shameful. Support Mohammed Shami fully. There are much bigger issues in this country. Hope sense prevails.” Renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar, the other half of Salim-Javed, approved of Hasin Jahan’s clothes. “The dress that Mrs Shami is wearing is extremely elegant and dignified. Anyone who has any problem with it is sick in his mind .” Akhtar’s son Farhan, tweeted in support of Shami, “Dear Mrs Shami, We have never met but I
must say that you look splendid in your gown. Regards to your proud husband. With love, Farhan.”
We have a weapon in the name of social media, but do we take undue advantage of it? Indian tennis star Sania Mirza was a target before and it’s now Shami’s wife! Who are we? It’s a democratic country and even in the name of religion, we have no right to intrude into one’s privacy. If the so-called custodians of discipline are so concerned, then take those on who exploit religious principles!
