It has been a comeback of a sort for Virender Sehwag. Forced into retirement, yes, one shouldn’t hesitate to use the word ‘forced,’ Sehwag has been a sensation in social media as well as in the commentary box. And now comes the news that the former opening batsman could take the reins of the Kings XI Punjab as the head coach.
Sanjay Bangar has stepped down and media reports indicate Sehwag can take his place as the coach of the team which desperately needs guidance to redeem itself in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The last two years have been pathetic for the Punjab side, and it would not be a bad idea to look to Sehwag, who has been part of the team as a player and a mentor, to bail it out.
Now, the question is: Can Sehwag deliver? Yes, he can. Firstly, it’s his carefree attitude that can make an impact on the players. “Don’t take any pressure, just go out and enjoy the game,” has always been his mantra even during his playing days. This approach can be a blessing in disguise for a beleaguered team.
Critics might point fingers at Sehwag’s lack of experience as a coach. To refute that notion, here is a man who has played more than 100 Test matches for the country and over 250 ODIs. Here is a man who has been a threat to bowlers all over the world and earned their respect. Former Pakistani captain Inzamam-ul-Haq rated Sehwag as the most feared batsman when the former was leading his country. In terms of experience, he would be way ahead of his predecessor, Bangar.
Sehwag certainly knows a thing or two about international cricket. It may be an exaggeration to some, but India also missed the opportunity of having this man from Najfgarh as captain on a regular basis. Yes, he has captained India (in 4 Tests and 12 ODIS), but that was a stop-gap arrangement.
Coming back to Sehwag’s approach, he always stands positive. Even under the most trying of conditions, his nerves never fell. He would walk down the middle humming an old Kishore Kumar number that had a positive effect on his partner as well. So, his presence in the dressing room of Kings XI Punjab will be a soothing factor for the boys.
Knowing Sehwag, he would not delve much into the technical aspect of the game, but would rather encourage his boys to play their natural game. Having been an attacking batsman, T-20 would be the ideal format for Sehwag to launch his coaching career with.
So, all the best Viru, if you at all, say yes to the offer! A new innings for you and a lot of fireworks from your team will be expected.
