Mumbai: Prodigious Mumbai batsman Prithvi Shaw has been named as the captain of the Indian team for the U-19 World Cup to be held next year in New Zealand. Punjab batsman Shubman Gill has been appointed as his deputy.
“The All-India Junior Selection Committee has picked the India U19 team for the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2018. The 16-team event will be held in New Zealand from 13th January to 3rd February 2018,” said BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhary in a release.
India along with Australia are the most successful teams in this competition as they have each won the title thrice. While Australia won the U-19 World Cup in 1998, 2002 and 2010, India emerged champions in 2000, 2008 and 2012. In the last edition of the competition held in Bangladesh, India reached the finals but we’re outplayed by the West Indies.
The youngsters would be participating in a national camp beginning on Friday, as part of the their preparations for the tournament. However, skipper Prithvi Shaw and Bengal pacer Ishan Porel, who have been crucial parts of their Ranji Trophy teams have been allowed to participate in the quarter-finals of the domestic tournament. They would join the national camp on December 12.
“A preparatory camp will be held in Bengaluru from Dec 8 -22, 2017,” said Choudhury.
He also added, “Mumbai’s Shaw and Bengal’s Porel have been permitted to join their respective Ranji Trophy sides for the quarterfinal stage and will join the camp on 12th December.”
