Football is a game like no other, its possibly the highest cohesive game you can ever witness, yet the greats have time and again made their presence felt – even when teamwork is the key. With the emergence of high quality club and international football at different levels, the competition to greatness gets stiffer every year. FIFA awards the best footballer on the planet with the Ballon d’Or. We take a look at the Top 5 Footballers playing the game right now.
5 .Kevin de Bruyne/Eden Hazard
We had to make this a tie. There was no way you could overlook either of Manchester City’s midfield genius or Chelsea’s (now Real Madrid’s) best player of the Season. The Belgians vying for the fifth spot don’t have much in common, apart from their nationality and their leagues till the 2018-19 season. KDB is part of a domestic winning Man City squad, one that raked up 100 points the season before. Hazard, meanwhile, single-handedly guided Chelsea to Europa League glory, a third place finish and secured himself a transfer to his dream club – Real Madrid.

4. Kylian Mbappe
The French beats midfielder Luka Modric, the latest Ballon d’Or winner to the 4th spot, as does he beat Mo Salah and a host of other names. Mbappe inspired France to a World Cup at the age of 19, in Russia with scintillating displays on the right wing – ripping apart teams like Argentina and Croatia. The PSG man is one of the most sought after talents in the World at the moment and although he’s tied to a long term contract at Paris for now, he could soon make the next big move.
3. Neymar Junior
A lot might argue that Neymar did little in the bygone season to deserve his place in this list, but this man is on a pedestral to become the next Leo Messi or the next CR7. The Brazillian has already won everything that the game has to offer on a club level, while he’s looking to fill his cabinet more with National trophies and medels. Fans would be eager to see the revamp of a rejuvenated Neymar for PSG or Barcelona next season.

2. Lionel Messi
Probably the best player to have graced the football pitch, Lionel Messi stands No.2 on our list. The GOAT according to many, the Argentina captain is a winner of Champions League, La Liga titles and multiple Copas. His greatness is limited by the fact that he has played in Spain all through his career, with a single team – Barcelona and that he has never won anything for Argentina.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo
CR7 has played in 4 countries and won Leagues and trophies in each of these countries for his respective clubs. He’s been a true leader for Portugal and has the Euro 2018 winners’ medal to his name. Currently plying his trade for Italian giants Juventus, the former Real Madrid star has worked with the best managers in the game and played in almost all frontline positions known to football. Truly the best of a generation.
