Mumbai: Dipa Karmakar, the first Indian woman Gymnast to qualify and then finish fourth in Rio Olympics 2016, should be made the Brand ambassador of India, said former Indian football Captain, Prasun Banerjee on Thursday.
In a press conference Banerjee told reporters, “She is the golden girl of the country who made all Indians proud with her performance in gymnastics and she should be made the brand ambassador of our country. I would raise the issue in the next session of Parliament,”
Dipa’s achievements in the gymnastics section of India is absolutely unbelievable and her contribution towards the Pride of India is something that cannot be neglected. Dipa being the first female Indian Gymnast not just to qualify in Women’s Vault in Rio games but also finished fourth after performing the Produnova Vault, which is one of the hardest known vault.
For her excellent contribution in the field of Gymnastics, Banerjee, a Trinamool Congress MP, felicitated her at her home at Abhoynagar on behalf of his party. Banerjee also a former Arjuna awardee who played for the country in the 1970s and 1980s and a former captain of Mohun Bagan team, handed over a green and maroon jersey of the club and a wooden relic of Ashokstambha to Dipa.
Vice-President of Trinamool Congress, Mukul Roy also felicitated the gymnast on behalf of the TMC and gave her a plaque, an ‘uttario’, two sarees and a gold necklace in presence of Chairman of the Tripura unit of TMC, Ratan Chakraborty and Sudip Roy Burman a former leader of the opposition and an MLA.
Dipa will be all ready to win a medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020 and with all the support from Indian government and former sportsmen, she might also become the Official ambassador of India.
