PV Sindhu
Pusarla Venkata Sindhu is a name who none would forget- She wrote her essay in silver in 2016 when she became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver medal. This medal was just the second medal India won in Badminton, the other one was won by Saina Nehwal, another iconic badminton player from India. Sindhu further lost her contest against Saina for the best Indian Badminton player, in 2018, when she had to be content with silver in women’s singles in Commonwealth Games 2018. The ace Indian Shuttler had also won silver in the 2017 BWF World Championship.
The younger daughter of PV Ramana and P. Vijaya, in 2013, became the first Indian woman’s singles player to win a medal in Badminton World Championships. In March 2015, she was awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honor. She is one of the top five shuttlers in the Woman Singles category. The Top Shuttler was conferred the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award by the Government of India.
Saina Nehwal
Saina Nehwal’s latest big achievement has been the 2018 Commonwealth Games Gold Medal at Gold Coast where she defeated PV Sindhu in a battle of Indian Colors. This gold medal was the second Commonwealth games Gold medal for the Indian Shuttler. The former World number 1, Saina Nehwal has won twenty three international titles, which include ten Super Series titles. By Achieving the top most rankings, she became the first Indian player, after past legend Prakash Padukone, to lead the world and first Female Badminton player. A Three time Olympian for India, she has won an Olympic Bronze.
Nehwal has achieved many milestones for India in Badminton. Among many first, she is the only Indian to have won at least one medal in every BWF major Individual event, i.e. Olympics, BWF World Championships and BWF World Junior Championships. Adding to this list, she is the first Indian badminton player to win an Olympic medal with being the only Indian to win the BWF World Junior Championship or to reach the final of the BWF World Championship.
In 2016, She got the prestigious Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in India, for her excellent contributions in Badminton. Before that, She won Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2009-10, Padma Shri in 2010, Arjuna Award in 2009 and the Most Promising Player of the Year (2008) award by Badminton World Federation.
Carolina Marin
Carolina Maria Marin Martin is the Badminton player from Spain. She is the former world No. 1 in the BWF rankings, Olympic Champion, twice the World Champion, four times the European Champion and the Woman Singles Champion.
Marin is currently ranked No. 5 in the world by the Badminton World Federation. In 2014 and 2015, the Top badminton player has consistently been the world champion twice in a singles. She won her first Olympic gold medal in the women’s singles at the 2016 Rio Olympics defeating PV Sindhu of India.
Ratchanok Intanon
The First Thai Player to become No. 1. in Woman’s Singles, she is known for her comforting pace and light footwork. In 2013, she also got the title of World Champion in Woman Singles.
She won her first individual international title in 2009 by winning the Vietnam International title. She made history of becoming the youngest champion at the age of 14 in the BWF World Junior Championship.
In 2010, at the age of 15, she successfully defended her title in the World Junior Championship in Mexico. And not only that, she won two back-to-back Grand Prix tournaments by winning the Yonax-Sunrises Vietnam Open Grand Prix and Indonesia Open Grand Prix Gold. In 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, She won silver medal as a member of the women’s team.
Tai Tzu-Ying
Tai Tzu-Ying is a Taiwan badminton player, who in 2011, won the Taiwan’s ranking competition title when she was only 16 years and 6 months, became the youngest ever player in Taiwanese badminton history.
In December 2016, in the 22nd year of her age, she became the world number 1 in Women’s Singles and has been there for a record 67 consecutive weeks since then.
The Taiwanese Ace was runner up of the 2010 Singapore Super Series. At 17, she won her first international title at the 2011 US Open Grand Prix and continued from good to better to win her biggest title in the 2014 Super Series Finals, and won the Indonesia Open, Superseries Premiere Event in 2016. She won six consecutive titles in 2016 and 2017 in a 27 match winning streak, after she lost to Sung Ji-Hyun at Singapore SuperSeries Finals. She also won the Hong Kong Super Series three times in 2014, 2016 and 2017.
