Kolkata: That’s sweet revenge. Leave aside the glam factor, but this lady knows the ways to take on the toughest of impediments. At the Rio Olympics, the girl from Hyderabad lost to the Spaniard, but Pusarla Venkata Sindhu has beaten two-time World Champion Carolina Marin in the Group B encounter and ensured herself of a berth in the final four of the BWF World Super Series Final held in Dubai today.
Sindhu born on July 5, 1995, almost decimated Marin by 21-17, 21-13 when they met again. With this victory, the shuttler from Hyderabad is just behind China’s Sun Yu. It was a contest worth remembering as too many ups and downs would have ensured that badminton lovers cherished it.
The tumbling of dominance made the match interesting enough, but the Olympics silver medalist, Sindhu never threw her hands in despair as she faced one onslaught after the other to finally romp home. The support from her coach, P Gopichand came in handy, as his experiences egged Sindu, who made it to the Top 20 of the BFW rankings at the age of 17, on.
And the net result was a victory over the lady who deprived her of a gold medal at Rio. Yes, Sindhu has arrived and time and again she has proved that she has in her the qualities to be a champion. The hugs after the Rio Olympics finals are a thing of the past, and Sindhu wants to end up on a winning note and the fact that she is yet to recover from the loss at Rio has been vindicated with her victory over Marin.
Sindhu may not be as lucky as a brand endorser, but the not-so-glamorous Hyderabadi shuttler is rewriting history and we need to acknowledge it. Slow and steady wins the race and Sindhu personifies it.
Let us laud her efforts!
