Kolkata: Actress Shraddha Kapoor seems to be the industry’s favourite when it comes to biopics. After playing underworld don Dawood Ibrahim’s sister Haseena Parkar, Shraddha is all set to play Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal in the latter’s biopic. The ace shuttler has done India proud with her consistent run at the highest level of the game and beyond doubt, she is worthy of being the subject of a film to be directed by Amol Gupte.
The Hyderabadi shuttler who won a bronze in the London Olympics has had a mixed run of late after recovering from an injury, but she is back on the court with a lot of zeal. For Shraddha, it is a challenge as she will be portraying two different characters on screen. However, there is no denying that she won’t let her fans down as she has already proved her mettle as a versatile actress. Said Shraddha to Times of India, “Most girls have played badminton at some point in their lives in school. I feel so lucky to be playing Saina, who’s not just been the world’s No. 1 badminton player, but is also a youth icon. I can’t wait to start prepping for my role.”
Shraddha joins Priyanka Chopra (MC Mary Kom), Emraan Hashmi (Mohammad Azharuddin), Sushan Singh Rajput (MS Dhoni), Farhan Akhtar (Milkha Singh) Irrfan Khan (Paan Singh Tomaar), Shah Rukh Khan (Mir Ranjan Negi), Aamir Khan (Mahavir Singh Phogat) among others who have essayed characters of sporting greats on screen. No doubt she joins an elite list.
Biopics have been a favourite with the audiences and the real-life stories have touched people’s hearts. And there’s no denying that Saina’s story will be one of the most anticipated ones as she has been an inspiration for youngsters. Though too many details of the film are not available, the journey of Saina does deserve to captured on screen.
Hoping another blockbuster is awaiting us and knowing Gupte’s obsession with perfection, the film might as well become a money spinner. Fingers crossed!
