Guadalajara: The Indians shot their way to glory at the 2018 ISSF World Cup Series in Guadalajara, Mexico by setting a new record in the 10m Air Rifle men’s event as well as winning three medals-one gold and two bronze.
Shahzar Rizvi and Mehuli Ghosh, who made their maiden World Cup appearances won the gold and bronze medal respectively on the first day which saw a total of six Indians participate.
Rizvi’s consistency was the highlight of his performance in the 10m Air Rifle men’s event where he attained the lead after the 14th shot and held on to it until the very end. He not only ended up with the top prize-the gold medal but also created a world record as he ended with 242.3 points. The 23-year-old Rizvi had earlier participated in the 2014 ISSF World Championship.
Mehuli Ghosh, meanwhile continued escalating greater heights when she won the bronze medal in the women’s 10m Air Rifle event, ending with a total of 228.4 points. The 17-year-old’s victory comes after a year she won the junior continental title in the Asian Championship.
The other bronze medal winner for India was Jitu Rai, who scored 219.0 points. Om Prakash Mitharval, who was India’s third finalist of the day failed to secure a podium finish as she ended fourth scoring 198.4 points in her maiden World Cup appearance.
Anjum Moudgil also finished fourth on the first day with 208.6 points while Apurvi Chandela ended with 144.1 points, finishing seventh in the 10m Women’s Air Rifle final.
The Indian shooting contingent to Mexico comprises of 33 shooters who would participate in 15 events.

The third and fourth positions were also equipped by Indian shooters Jitu Rai bagging bronze and Om Prakash Mitharval. In the event of Women’s 10m air rifle, Mehuli Ghosh took away bronze with a record of 228.
