Kolkata: 17-year-old Prithvi Shaw continued to impress everyone with his batting performances as the youngster registered yet another hundred as Mumbai ended up with 264/6 against Odisha at the end of the first day’s play in Bhubaneswar.
The prodigious batsman now has four first class hundreds in five matches-a feat second only to the great Sachin Tendulkar, who had seven first class tons before the age of 18.
The visitors didn’t get to the best of starts as Akhil Herwadkar was sent back for just 14 by right-arm medium pacer Basant Mohanty. But then the youngster along with Ajinkya Rahane put up a valuable 136-run partnership before the latter missed out on a well-deserved half-century when he was dismissed for 49.
Shaw hit a total of 18 fours in his 105-run knock that came of 153 deliveries and after he was dismissed in the 44th over by Mohanty, Mumbai clearly were pushed to the back foot as they could score only 108 runs in the next 46 overs.
In Kolkata, Abhishek Raman’s brilliant 176-run knock and an unbeaten 78 from skipper Manoj Tiwary helped Bengal end the first day at 306/5 against Himachal Pradesh.
Sudip Chatterjee, who had scored two centuries in the first two matches could muster only 15 runs before falling to Pankaj Jaiswal in the 12th over. Wriddhiman Saha too failed to make an impact as he scored 12 but Tiwary’s presence at he crease at the end of the day’s play is an assurance that Bengal can still post a challenging first innings total on the board.
