Profile | Vinesh Phogat is an Indian International wrestler, who represents India since 2013. She came from a successful wrestling family of India, where her uncle was an Indian amateur wrestler and her cousins Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari are international wrestlers. She got full support from her family to become a national-level wrestler, despite strong opposition from their community. Making her cousins her true inspiration, she took her professional lessons from her uncle Mahavir Singh Phogat. She began her international journey from 2013 Youth Wrestling Championship and won a silver medal in that competition. Then she participated in Asian Championship and became a bronze medalist in her first attempt. It was the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow where she won a gold. After this, she repeats this winning trail in 2018 Commonwealth Games as well and won gold in the women’s 50kg freestyle wrestling in Gold Coast. That year, she won gold in the 2018 Asian Games and became the first Indian female wrestler to win gold in the Asian Games. Recently, she took participated in the 2019 Asian Wrestling Championship and won a bronze medal defeating Chinese Qianyu Pang in women’s freestyle category.
