Profile | Karnam Malleswari is an Indian former weightlifter who represented India internationally from 1993 to 2004. She is the first Indian female athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics. Malleswari was born in a hamlet in Andhra Pradesh and started her weightlifting career at the age of 12. She has four sisters and all of them are skilled weightlifter with the professional training. She used to take her primary weightlifting lessons from the local coach Neelamshetty Appanna and then later joined the Sports Authority institution of India after moving to Delhi. Malleswari began her career with the international weightlifting championship in 1993 and came third at the 54 kg division. She took participate in the World Championship for the very next year and bagged a silver medal at that competition. Then she kept her winning trail on track for the consecutive competitions till 2000. In 2000, Malleswari made history by winning the first Olympics medal by a female Indian athlete at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She snatched a total weight of 240 kg at that competition and clinched a bronze medal at the end. After her marriage and having a baby, she took a break of 2 years and prepared herself for the next big championship at that time. In 2002, Malleswari tried to back at the international field with the Commonwealth Games but couldn’t make it due to some personal crisis. Then she took participate in the 2004 Olympics but couldn’t make an impression there and declared her retirement instantly after this competition.
