Profile | Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is considered by many to be one of the finest managers of his decade, having faced primary competition from his contemporary Pep Guardiola and the likes of Antonio Conte and Massimiliano Allegri. He has won the Bundesliga, Champions League, DFB Pokal and the UEFA Super Cup among other honors. He is on course to win his first Premier League title, Liverpool’s first of the Premier League era. Klopp spent his entire playing career in Mainz where he became manager later and led the side to Bundesliga promotion in 2006, finishing 11th in their debut season. They got demoted two years later and Klopp resigned from his position, becoming the longest serving Mainz manager in the process. He joined Borussia Dortmund next, guiding them to the UEFA Champions League Final in 2012-13 and then winning the famous (Dortmund’s first) domestic double in the next season. Klopp trained and created stars out of youngsters in the form of Lewandowski, Reus, Goetze, Hummels and Kagawa. He left Dortmund to take on a new challenge at one of the biggest clubs in the World, Liverpool. After a topsy-turvy first season, where Liverpool finished fourth thanks to a breakthrough season from Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah. The following season, Klopp and Liverpool challenged Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City all the way, securing a second place finish with record 97 points to City’s 98. As a massive compensation, they won the UEFA Champions League the same year, beating Premier League opponents Tottenham Hotspurs in the process. This season, Liverpool have been absolutely unstoppable, romping to the Premier League title with a 16 point gap at the top of the table, while also still being in the FA Cup and the Champions League Round of 16, keeping hopes of a treble alive. Klopp is known for his philosophy and contribution to the art of gegenpressing, a style of football that encourages teams to win the ball back immediately after losing it, instead of settling back to regroup and defend. Klopp’s team are hungry, fast and brilliant on the counter as they attempt to keep the ball in attacking areas. Klopp’s style of football has made Liverpool’s front three as one of the best front threes in World football, while the addition of Alisson and van Dijk in defense means they are not susceptible anymore to counter attacks. Klopp is right now being suited by multiple clubs across Europe, notably Real Madrid and Bayern Munich while he also is in the running for the hot seat of the German national team.
