Profile | Anju Bobby George is an Indian former athlete, who has represented Indian internationally from 2002 to 2013. She was a bronze medalist in World Championship in 2003 and became the first Indian female athlete to do so. She was a gold medalist too in the IAAF World Athletics championship for the year 2005. Anju had a successful record in some other significant international championships as well including Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. She started her athletics career since her school days got inspired by her father and her school coach. Anju began her winning trail since the year 1991-1992 during the School Athletic meet, which was actually an interstate championship. Then, she started her professional athletics career from 1996 with the Junior Asian Championship held in Delhi. She made a world record in 1999 at the Bangalore federation Cup and started making headlines for her back-to-back achievements at the national level competitions. 2002 was a supremely glorious year for Anju, who bagged a bronze medal at the CMG and a Gold medal at the Asian Games at that time. After this, she was considered one of the most successful female athletes of India and soon became the top one among them with her World Championship win in 2013. She was for both the 2004 Athens Olympics and 2008 Beijing Olympics but unfortunately failed to make her mark in this all-time high international championship. After her retirement from the international field, she was appointed as the president of the Kerala State Sports Council in 2016. (as Compiled by Madhushree Das Ghosh) (Profile Image from Facebook) |
