This was largely due to the great partnership of 149 runs between Glenn Turner and John Parker for the 3rd wicket. The two took New Zealand out of the nervous start and played with great aggression.
While Turner scored an unbeaten knock of 171 runs in the match, Parker registered a rapid 66 runs playing just 68 balls. The East African team was witness to another batting blitzkrieg by the hosts England at Edgbaston. The English side chose to bat first and soon the decision proved right. They would not lose a wicket till 158 runs were scored for the opening partnership between Dennis Amiss and Barry Wood.
The two openers score half-centuries each with Wood registering a knock of 77 while Amiss scored 88. England posted 290 runs on the board and managed to get the East African side all out for just 94 runs. The hosts won the match by an astonishing total of 196 runs. 3. Sadiq Mohammad & Majid Khan 159 vs Sri Lanka
Pakistan and Sri Lanka were placed in Group B in the tournament. The two sides contested against each other in the last group match of the series. Pakistan batted first and their openers got them off to a flying start by registering a partnership of 159 runs for the 1st wicket. Majid Khan and Sadiq Mohammad both batted aggressive scoring 74 and 84 runs each respectively.
Pakistan thus put 330 runs of the board. In return, the Sri Lankans were all out for 138 runs in just over 50 overs. England opened their world cup quest against India at Lords. The hosts batted first and put a remarkable total of 334 runs for India to chase. The England innings were primarily shaped by a great 2nd wicket partnership of 176 runs between Dennis Amiss and Keith Fletcher. Dennis Amiss scored 137 runs in the match whereas Fletcher also played an important innings scoring 68.

1. Rick McCosker & Alan Turner 182 vs Sri Lanka
Australia and Sri Lanka locked horns at the Oval cricket ground. The Aussies chose to bat first and scored 328 runs for the loss of 5 wickets. Their openers Alan Turner and Rick McCosker provided the great start scoring 182 runs for the opening wicket partnership. Tuner scored 101 runs whereas McCoster played a watchful knock of 73. They provided the solid foundation for quick scoring in the death overs.
In return, Sri Lanka tried their best to remain within the distance of the chase. They however kept on losing wickets at regular intervals which finally impacted their run rate.
