Mumbai: Winning the third and final Test match by five wickets in Sharjah on Thursday, West Indies severed a blow to Pakistan leaving them at below-par totals of 282 and 208, and driving them to lose the final match after winning three back to back Test series 2-1 previously.
West Indian all rouder, Carlos Brathwaite guided his team to their first victory in 14 Tests, as he became the first opener in the history of test cricket to carry his bat in both innings, building up unbeaten scores of 142 and 60.
Pakistan will now go on to play two Tests in New Zealand starting from 17th of November till November 25, where the first match will be played in Christchurch and the second in Hamilton.
Mickey Arthur, new coach of the Pakistani cricket team expressed that his team had been given a wake-up call for their upcoming tours of New Zealand and Australia, after they turned casualty at the hands of West Indies for the first time in 18 months, restoring focus.
For the victorious side, Kraigg Brathwaite’s skills on the field earned his team a much-due victory as he remained not-out in both innings of a Test match, in a first.
“It is a wake-up call,” Arthur told AFP. ”Hopefully that gives the shock to the players they needed before our tough tours to New Zealand and Australia.”
“It’s a good wake-up call and just says that if you’re off your discipline in international cricket at any time you can be beaten,” said Arthur, who took over as coach in May this year.
“We certainly took the pedal off the accelerator in this game and were below in standards and intensity,” he added.
Cautioning Pakistan, Arthur expressed that they could expect a tougher time with the competition this time around, especially against New Zealand who look keen to hit back hard after being driven off while playing against India last month. “If you look around the international cricket at the moment there is no easy bait in their own conditions so it’s going to be five tough matches for us.”
Pakistan move on next to Australia for a 3 Test series, commencing with a day-night match at Brisbane, on December 15.
