Bangalore: After being left out of the Indian contingent at the Commonwealth Games 2018 to be held at Gold Coast, Australia, para power-lifter Sakina Khatun has threatened to commit suicide in front of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), if she is not considered for the Games.
“I am still waiting for my name to feature in the list,” she said as quoted by ANI. “I will fight till last and if then then also my name is not included, I will move to court because they have spoiled my life. Even if I have to commit suicide infront of IOA, I will not leave it.”

Interestingly, the 28 year-old who remains India’s only para-athlete to earn a medal at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in the lightweight category, is also ranked second in the Asian rankings and CWG Federation.
“After all these, I am broken from inside but still I am practising. If I don’t go for the Commonwealth Games, I will commit suicide in front of IOA,” she added.

Khatun’s omission from the Indian team that will board the flight to Australia came as surprise despite the power-lifter meeting the eligibility criteria set by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF).
She has already written a letter to the Paralympic committee of India (PCI) for her inclusion in the team, but is yet to receive any reply from them. Reportedly the PCI has sent a notice to the IOA, asking it to request the CWG organising committee to allow her entry.

“I am deeply saddened over it. I have been waiting for these tournaments for the last four years. I have practised extremely hard for it but now I don’t know whether to practise or handle other things. I am so stressed,” she said in a remorse tone.
The 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist also added, “I have reached this level after a lot of hard work. Our Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) always talks about Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” (Save daughter, educate daughter) then why has he left me in the middle of such a nuisance. I will request him to take immediate notice.”
