Manipur born Amateur Boxer Ngangom Dingko Singh would go on to become one of the ace boxers India has produced ever and inspire many oncoming boxers from his state and country. Singh was born on September 27, 1978 at Sekta village of Imphal East. Fourth among the five kids of his parents, with two elder sisters and an elder brother and a sister younger than him, Dingko would be spotted by trainers at Manipur and would then be helped by Special Area Games Scheme of Sports Authority of India. At 10, Dingko Singh won Sub Junior National Boxing Championship.
Dingko Singh would start his international career in 1997 in flying career winning Kings Cup at Bangkok, Thailand and would go on to win the gold medal of Battamweight Category during Bangkok Asian Games 1998. His appearances at Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games 2002 wouldn’t yield anything and he’d soon be fading away. A fracture would result in him hanging his kits before taking up coaching job at Imphal SAI Center.
Ngangom Dingko Singh was an employee of Indian Navy and was Master Chief Petty Officer. Singh was diagnosed to be suffering from liver cancer in 2017 and he would be under treatment for the same till the time he breathed his last on June 10, 2021.
