Andy Murray fans seem to be in a sort of a fix after the series of events that they have fallen witness to in the past few days. It all started with the Madrid Open where a full of confidence Murray was beaten by his nemesis Novak Djokovic. The loss resulted in the Brit wielding his World No2 rank to Roger Federer and to culminate all this Murray announced that he was parting ways with his coach for 2 years French women Amelie Mauresmo, a two time grand slam winner.
Mauresmo had joined team Murray in the June of 2014 after he parted ways with the Czech Ivan Lendl.
It was under Czech’s coaching that Murray has enjoyed what could be said as the best phase of his career yet, winning two Grand Slams US Open 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013 and an Olympic Gold medal in the London Olympics 2012. However, under Mauresmo Andy though has managed to make it to Grand Slam finals, Australian Open 2015 and 2016 but has not added to his exiting two grand slams tally.
The two year partnership ended with a mutual understanding as both individuals agreed that it was becoming difficult to continue due to personal commitments. Mauresmo who became a mother in August last year was not able to devote time to Murray, she had only managed to give him a total of 50 days since which was not what Murray was looking at a time when he is bidding of sorts to revive his career which has been going through a lot of ups and down in the past two years.
Under Mauresmo his clay court game has increased leaps and bounce and he finally managed to add a maiden clay court title under his belt at Madrid Open last year after beating Rafael Nadal in the final but he has still not been able to carve himself out as a top notch individual unlike World No 1 Novak Djokovic.
And with age catching up, Murray turns 29 this week , time is running out for him if he wants to earn himself a place among the legends and live up to the expectations that his fans have of him.
This move can be seen as a step in that direction he wants a coach who can be there for him at this phase in his career, personally he would want the his former coach Ivan Lendl back but given Lendl is already involved in a project in America and doesn’t like the idea of travelling around the world chances of it are slim. He is exploring other options and is open to a female coach as well but who it will be that the Brit chooses remains to be seen.
