Today we bring you the Cricketers who picked the most wickets in Asia Cup 2008. The Asia Cup was played during June 24-July 6 in Pakistan, with six teams participating including the hosts, teams were divided in two groups and group stage saw round robin matches to decide the top 2 in group who would go on to play the Super Four which decided teams for the tournament final. India & Sri Lanka played the tournament final with Sri Lanka winning their fourth title. Explosive Batsman Sanath Jayasuriya led the batting cards of the tournament edition. Here we detail the bowlers who grabbed the most wickets in Asia Cup 2008.
5. RP Singh (India)
The Raebareli born Indian Medium Pacer debuted in ODI in 2005. Rudra Pratap Singh would pick 7 wickets from the five matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2008 at an average of 34.14. With these wickets, RP Singh featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2008. His best was 3/67 against Sri Lanka at National Stadium, Karachi on July 6, in the tournament final. Sri Lanka had batted first and scored 273 from their 50 overs with Sanath Jayasuriya scoring 125 & Tillakaratne Dilshan scoring 56. RP Singh & Ishant Sharma took 3 wickets each, while Irfan Pathan took 2 and Virender Sehwag took one. In reply, India were bowled out for 173 with only Sehwag crossing the 50 runs mark.
4. Iftikhar Anjum (Pakistan)
The Khanewal born Pakistan Medium Bowler debuted in ODIs in 2004. Rao Iftikhar Anjum would pick 9 wickets from the five matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2008 at an average of 23.33. With these wickets, Anjum featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2008. His best was 3/51 against arch-rivals India on July 2. India had batted first and scored 308/7 with MS Dhoni’s 76 & Rohit Sharma‘s 58. Anjum took 3, Abdur Rauf took 2 while Sohail Tanvir & Saeed Ajmal both took one wicket each. Pakistan chased down the target in 45.3 overs with Younis Khan scoring 123 not out while Misbah-ul-Haq scoring 70 not out.
3. Sohail Tanvir (Pakistan)
The Rawalpindi born Left-arm medium fast bowler started his ODI career in 2007. Sohail Tanvir would pick 10 wickets from the five matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2008 at an average of 24.10. With these wickets, Tanvir featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2008. His best was 5/48 against Sri Lanka in the Super Four match of the tournament at Karachi. Sri Lanka had batted first and scored 302/7 from their overs with Kumar Sangakkara scoring 112 & Chamara Silva scoring 46. Apart from Tanvir’s fifer, Wahab Riaz & Mansoor Amjad took one-apiece. In reply, Pakistan could manage only 238/9 from their overs; Shoaib Malik scored 52 while Misbah-ul-Haq scored 76. Ajantha Mendis took 4 while Nuwan Kulasekara took 2.
2. Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka)
The Sri Lankan Legend debuted in ODI in 1993. Muttiah Muralitharan took 11 wickets from the five matches he played at an average of 16.72. With these wickets, Muralitharan featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2008 . His best was 5/31 against Bangladesh on June 30. Batting first, Sri Lanka scored 332/8 from their overs with Sanath Jayasuriya scoring 130 & Kumar Sangakkara scoring 121. It was a 201 runs opening partnership between the two. Farhad Reza & Alok Kapali took 2 wickets each. In reply, Bangladesh were bowled out for 174 with Murali’s fifer and Ajantha Mendis’ two wickets. Nazimuddin (47) & Raqibul Hasan (52) were the only resistance.
1. Ajantha Mendis (Sri Lanka)
The Sri Lankan Mystery Spinner debuted in ODI in 2008. Balapuwaduge Ajantha Winslow Mendis would pick 17 wickets from the five matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2008 at an average of 8.52. With these wickets, Mendis led the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2008. His best was 6/13 against India on July 6 in the tournament final at Karachi. Batting first, Sri Lanka scored 273. India, in reply, were bowled out for 173, losing the match by 100 runs. Apart from Mendis, Chaminda Vaas took 2, while Muralitharan & Nuwan Kulasekara took 1-each.
Only three bowlers took 5-wickets haul, with Mendis also taking a 6-wicket haul, Muralitharan & Tanvir were the other bowlers who took 5 wicket hauls. These were the top wicket-takers, the ones who made the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2008. The four teams that participated in Asia Cup 2008 were India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka & Bangladesh. Sri Lanka won the tournament title under Mahela Jayawardene’s captaincy.
