Today we bring you the Cricketers who picked the most wickets in Asia Cup 2004. The Indian Oil Asia Cup was played during July 16- August 1, 2004 in Sri Lanka, with six teams participating including the hosts, teams were divided in two groups and group stage saw round robin matches to decide the top 2 in group who would go on to play the Super Four which decided teams for the tournament final. India & Sri Lanka played the tournament final with Sri Lanka winning their third title. Pakistan All-rounder Shoaib Malik led the batting cards of the tournament edition. Here we detail the bowlers who grabbed the most wickets in Asia Cup 2004.
5. Mohammad Sami (Pakistan)
The Karachi born fast bowler started his ODI career in 2001. Mohammad Sami would pick 8 wickets from the five matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2004 at an average of 21.87. With these wickets, Sami featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2004. His best was 2/16 against Hong Kong. Pakistan had batted first and scored 343/5 from their overs with Younis Khan scoring 144, the best individual score of the season & Shoaib Malik scoring 118. Hong Kong, in reply, were bowled out for 165 with Sami’s 2, Imran Farhat’s 3, Shoaib Malik’s 4 and Abdul Razzaq’s 1.
4. Shoaib Malik (Pakistan)
The Sialkot born Pakistan All-rounder debuted in ODIs in 1999. Shoaib Malik would pick 9 wickets from the five matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2004 at an average of 14.55. With these wickets, Malik featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2004. His best was 4/19 against Hong Kong on July 18 at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo. Pakistan had won a high-scoring match against the Associate nation by 173 runs.
3. Nuwan Zoysa (Sri Lanka)
The Colombo born Left-arm medium fast bowler started his ODI career in 1997. Zoysa would go on to pick 10 wickets from the five matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2004 at an average of 15.60. With these wickets, Demuni Nuwan Tharanga Zoysa featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2004. His best was 3/29 against Pakistan in the 8th match of the tournament on July 21 at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. Pakistan, who had batted first, were bowled out for 122 with Zoysa’s 3, Farveez Maharoof’s 2, Muttiah Muralitharan’s 1 and Sanath Jayasuriya’s 1. Sri Lanka chased down this lowly target with 7 wickets intact.
2. Sachin Tendulkar (India)
The Indian Cricket Legend would score runs and create milestones for upcoming batsmen and would be among wickets with his leg spin bowling. Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar took 12 wickets from the six matches he played at an average of 12.25. With these wickets, Tendulkar featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2004 . His best was 3/21 against UAE at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on July 16, in the second match of the tournament.
Batting first, India scored 260/6 from their overs with Sourav Ganguly’s 56 and Rahul Dravid’s 104. Dravid’s hundred was the only hundred by an Indian in that tournament. Sachin couldn’t do much from the bat, but Sachin wasn’t only about his immaculate batting. Tendulkar would bowl a spell of 4 overs, 21 runs and 3 wickets. Irfan Pathan took 3, Balaji took 2 while Zaheer & Kumble took 1-each as UAE were bowled out for 144.
1. Irfan Pathan (India)
The Vadodara born Indian Medium Pacer debuted in ODI in 2004. Irfan Khan Pathan would pick 14 wickets from the six matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 2004 at an average of 16.28. With these wickets, Pathan led the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2004. His best was 3/28 against UAE in the same match that Sachin took his best of the Asia Cup 2004. India would go on to win the match by 116 runs.
Only three bowlers took 4-wickets haul and no 5 wickets haul was taken in the tournament. These were the top wicket-takers, the ones who made the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 2004. The six teams that participated in Asia Cup 2004 were India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, UAE & Bangladesh. Sri Lanka won the tournament title under Marvan Atapattu’s captaincy.
