Today we bring you the Cricketers who picked the most wickets in Asia Cup 1984. The Rothmans Asia Cup was played in 1984, with three teams playing three matches in a round robin format with each team playing once against the other two during April 6–13. This was the inaugural edition of the Asia Cup run by Asian Cricket Council. Here we detail the bowlers who grabbed the most wickets in Asia Cup 1984.
5. Roger Binny
Indian Medium pacer-all rounder Roger Binny started his career in 1980. Binny was also a member of the World Cup winning team of 1983. In the ACC Asia Cup 1984, Roger Binny took 3 wickets from the two matches India played. With these wickets, Roger Michael Humphrey Binny featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1984. His best was 3/33 against arch-rivals Pakistan in the last match on April 13.
India had set a target of 189 for the Pakistan team with Surinder Khanna scoring 56. Binny’s scalps would include Zaheer Abbas, the Pakistan Captain and their batting mainstay. India won the match by 54 runs.
4. Chetan Sharma
The Indian Medium pacer debuted in ODI in 1983. Chetan Sharma would pick 3 wickets from the two matches India played in the ACC Asia Cup 1984. With these wickets, Sharma featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1984. His best was 3/22 against Sri Lanka in the second match on April 8. Sri Lanka were sent into bat first by Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar and the bowlers justified the decision by bowling the team out for 96 with Madan Lal also taking 3. India won the match by 10 wickets.
3. Arjuna Ranatunga
The Sri Lankan right arm medium bowler & batsman started his ODI career in 1982. Arjuna Ranatunga would pick 3 wickets from the two matches Sri Lanka played in the ACC Asia Cup 1984. With these wickets, Ranatunga featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1984. His best was 3/38 against Pakistan in the first match on April 6. Sri Lanka sent Pakistan into bat first and they made 187/9, with Ranatunga taking 3 and Somachandra De Silva taking 2. Sri Lanka chased down the target with 5 wickets to spare as Roy Dias scored 57 not out & Ranatunga scoring 26.
2. Madan Lal
The Indian Medium pacer debuted in ODI in 1974. Madan Lal, who was an integral part of 1975, 1979 & 1983 World Cup team of India, would pick 3 wickets from the two matches India played in the ACC Asia Cup 1984. With these wickets, Madan Lal Udhouram Sharma featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1984. His best was 3/11 against Sri Lanka in the second match on April 8. Sri Lanka were sent into bat first by Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar and the bowlers justified the decision by bowling the team out for 96 with Madan Lal also taking 3 including the top scorer Ranjan Madugalle & Aravinda de Silva.
1. Ravi Shastri
The Indian Slow left-arm orthodox bowler debuted in ODI in 1981, was part of the World Champion Indian team of 1983. Ravi Shastri would pick 4 wickets from the two matches India played in the ACC Asia Cup 1984. With these wickets, Ravishankar Shastri led the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1984. His best was 3/40 against arch-rivals Pakistan in the third match on April 13. Batting first after winning the toss, India had set a target of 189 for Pakistan. Shastri & Binny both starred with 3-wickets each in the match to win it for India. These were the only two wicket-takers as other four wickets fell as run outs.
