Kolkata: In what can be termed as a deeply saddening news, Mohameddan Sporting Club president and Trinamool lawmaker Sultan Ahmed passed away in the city due to a cardiac arrest on Monday at 11:30 am. Following the attack, he was rushed to Belle Vue Clinic hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. He was 64.
The CEO of the hospital, Pradeep Tandon while speaking to Indian Express said, “Sultan Ahmed has expired. He had a massive cardiac arrest at his home at about 11.15 to 11.30 am. By the time he was brought here it was 12 15 pm. We started the treatment but we had to declare him brought dead.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, shocked by the incident took to Twitter to express her condolences as she tweeted, “Shocked and deeply saddened at the passing of Sultan Ahmed sitting @AITCOfficial LS MP & my long term colleague. Condolences to his family.”
Ahmed had been a towering figure in Kolkata football for his contribution towards the development and growth of Mohammedan Sporting Club which once used to be one of the heavyweight clubs in the city.
After his saddening demise, his body was taken to his house from the hospital where Mohammedan Sporting coach Biswajit Bhattacharya, CM Mamata Banerjee, established Maidan coach Mridul Banerjee and other officials and dignitaries visited to pay their last respects to the departed soul.
As a show of respect, the players participating in the CFL match between Mohammedan Sporting and Calcutta Customs would observe a two-minute silence before the match.
