Jamshedpur: Trindade Goncalves’s 86th minute winner summed up what was an incredible evening for the debutants Jamshedpur FC, who rallied back despite being two goals behind to eventually defeat Delhi Dynamos 3-2 in a five goal super contest at the JRD Tata Complex here on Sunday.
The Brazilian on loan from Flamengo needed just 19 minutes after coming on from the bench to steer the ‘Men of Steel’ home, in what was their fourth win this season and pushed them to fifth with 16 points from 11 outings.
Delhi meanwhile remained last after another disappointing defeat, one they would have not perceived of losing after scoring two in the space of two minutes. They had dominated the proceedings till then with some impressive play, but Ashim Biswas came close for the hosts to score in the opening four minutes.
16 minutes later though it was Ulche who struck after reaching a pin-point Nandhakumar Sekar cross from a move that countered an Jamshedpur attack.
Ulches’s second from another such cross was a sucker-punch that earned the young Sekar his second assist of the night.
Jamshedpur however didn’t cow down and were rewarded soon after, when Tiri headed home from a Jerry Mawihmingthanga corner in the 29th minute out-jumping Pritam Kotal who had shielded the Spaniard all evening and though Chhangte had both time and space to extend Delhi’s lead standing at the brink of half-time, his shot sailed over the bar.
Biswas was then guilty of missing a similar chance for the home team when on an one-on-one situation with the Dynamos custodian Arnab Das Sharma but just like his junior rival shot wide of target. Raju Yumnam however wasn’t having any of it and soon levelled terms in the 54th minute, with a curled effort that bagned the net.
It was after Jerry’s corner was headed away by the Delhi defense that the ball landed at the full-back’s foot and he didn’t mull over, rifling a shot well passed Sharma and into the goal, to make it 2-2.
Goncalves then came out with the winner, just minutes after coming on in the 67th minute. His shot on the turn after receiving a great pass from Priori, stood a highlight of how far has Jamshedpur come in the season and may well end up in the play-offs.
