Kolkata: Irish football legend Robert David, ‘Robbie’ Keane was linked to a move to the ISL for some time now and finally, all the speculations and regarding the same have come true as the star forward has been roped in by the defending champions Atletico De Kolkata for the fourth edition of the famous tournament.
Keane, a legend in all senses of the term has made 146 appearances for the Republic of Ireland and has 68 goals to his name. He also a good amount of Premier League experience as he played for top clubs like Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspurs.
He was also the top-scorer for Ireland in the 2002 FIFA World Cup and also played for his country in the UEFA Euro 2012 and Euro 2016.
He said, “I feel extremely fortunate to have played for some of the best clubs in England and the USA, as well as representing my country at several major tournaments.”
“At this stage of my career, the offer to experience a new league and culture in Asia appealed to me. To join the current Indian Super League champions is a great pleasure and through hardwork I hope to bring the ATK fans more success,” Keane further added.
One of the best strikers in the English Premier League at one point of time, Keane flew off to America after leaving European football and has made over 100 appearances for Major League Soccer (MLS) team LA Galaxy.
Sanjiv Goenka, the principal owner of the Kolkata based club hopes that Keane would bring some Irish magic to play when he takes the field for ATK. He said, “As a football fan I am eagerly looking forward to some Irish magic touch on the field when Robbie plays his first game in our colours.”
He also added, “His envious record as a centre forward while playing for his country Ireland, English Premier League Clubs or Major League Soccer teams is known to all football fans. I am sure it will be a great association and a learning curve for our entire team ATK.”
Earlier, ATK’s star striker Iain Hume was signed by Kerala Blasters which left many Kolkata football fans disheartened. But Keane’s inclusion would undoubtedly lift their spirits as the side look forward to stamp their authority in the ISL once again.
