As per press release issued in the late afternoon today, the apex Olympic body of the World has signed a long-term agreement with the International Paralympic Committee wherein it has promised the apex Paralympic body for all support in the Paralympic Movement.
Speaking about the agreement, the IOC President, Thomas Bach, said, “This agreement is an important milestone in the implementation of Olympic Agenda 2020.”
The agreement which talks about cooperation between IOC and IPC, covers the following aspects:
- the visibility of the Paralympic Games and the Paralympic brand;
- existing cooperation, Olympic Agenda 2020,
- the strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement;
- the financial stability and long-term viability of the IPC, the Paralympic Games and the Paralympic Movement.The validity period of the agreement is 16 years and would extend till 2032- also focuses on taking the current partnerships and cooperation to a new level. These agreements were signed prior to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“The IOC and IPC share the same goal of making the world a better place through sport, and I look forward to our two organisations working closely together to achieve this. The IPC’s focus on sport for all and on high-level performance will enable it to reach more and more people around the world, and to ensure the organisation’s long-term success,” the IOC President concluded with.
The IOC and IPC signed a MoU which details the principles of this new long-term strategic alliance between the two apex sports organizations.
Sir Philip Craven, the IPC President, commented: “I am delighted that the IPC and IOC have agreed on the principles and vision behind a new long-term agreement that will further strengthen and support the Paralympic Movement in the years to come.”
Continuing further, he added,”The IOC is the IPC’s number one strategic partner, and we are grateful to President Bach and the Olympic Movement for their continued support. We will now work together over the coming weeks and months to finalize the agreement which will take our partnership into a fourth decade and make the Paralympic Movement more self-sustainable.”
The agreement is seen as historic in terms of collaboration which can change the course of future major sporting events, and another step brought in the world of Sports by the Olympic Agenda 2020.
