Mumbai: India would get to host the 2023 World Cup as well as the Champions Trophy in 2021, confirmed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in a Special General Meeting (SGM) on Monday.
Thus, for the very first time, India would be hosting completely. Earlier, it had co-hosted the marquee tournament in 1987, 1996 and 2011. Since the beginning of the World In 1975, India have won the title twice- in 1983 under the leadership of Kapil Dev and in 2011 under Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Not only this, but the Indians would also host Afghanistan for the first Test match in their cricketing history in 2019-2020. Earlier this year on June 7, Afghanistan along with Ireland were made full members of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
After the SGM, BCCI acting secretary Amitabh Choudhary said, “Afghans were scheduled to play their first Test in 2019 versus Australia but considering the historic relationship between India and Afghanistan, we decided to host their first Test.”
Earlier Afghanistan had played their home games against Ireland in Greater Noida in March 2017.
The SGM also saw the discussion of the number of days being reversed for hosting home matches in the period between 2019-2023. India had planned to play 81 games while the number of playing days has been reduced to 306.
