With new partners Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis made it to the women’s doubles final in Cincinnati title. As the No. 1 team of Sania and Hingis split before Olympics they were pairing with Barbora Strycovan and CoCo Vandeweghe respectively. Sania and Hingis knew their strengths very well and the match was close in two set.
The new pair of Sania Mriza and Barbora Strycova came back from two breaks down to take the first set for 7-5. The pair of Hingis and Vandeweghe had lead in the first set with 5-1 and three set points when Mirza and Strycova staged their comeback. The Indian and Czech Republic pair won the 11 game of the next 12 to take the first set.
In the second set, the new pair of Indian and Czech Republic players was leading with 5-1 but Hingis and Vandeweghe narrowed the gap to 5-4. Coming from back of the score several times Mirza and Strycova made the first five victories as a team this week.
After one of the most impressive doubles stretches in WTA history Mirza and Hingis started their first tournament with new partners. The past two year saw Mirza and Hingis winning 14 titles, including 2015 Wimbledon, US Open and 2016 Australian Open. In the history of open era Mirza is the third woman to win two Cincinnati titles.
Before Cincinnati Open Mirza and Hingis were holding the world ranking No. 1 but as they departed and Mirza winning the title she will be holding the No. 1 ranking alone in the ranking releasing next week.
