Skeleton athlete Sungbin Yun of Korea is currently the man to beat this Olympic season. At the third stop in the 2017/2018 BMW IBSF World Cup in Whistler (CAN), the 2016 World Championship bronze medallist won his second race in succession. On his first run, Yun also managed to set a new track record for Whistler Sliding Centre.

Achieving a time of 51.99 seconds, the Korean Skeleton Athlete became the first skeleton athlete to officially complete the 1,450-metre trip down the 2010 Olympic track in under 52 seconds. After two runs, Sungbin Yun held a 0.75-second lead over Junior World Champion Nikita Tregubov of Russia, who finished second in Whistler, marking his best World Cup result to date. Tomass Dukurs of Latvia (0.99 seconds back) finished third.
Dave Greszczyszyn of Canada, who secured a surprising third place after the first run, eventually fell back to seventh but still celebrated his best result of the season in front of a home crowd. On his third ever World Cup start, Alex Hanssen of Norway made it through to the second heat for the first time to achieve his best result by far in 13th place.

Following the third of eight races in the BMW IBSF World Cup 2017/2018, Sungbin Yun (KOR, 660 points) has moved ahead to take the lead in the overall standings. The defending World Cup holder Martins Dukurs of Latvia (611), who was previously joint first with Yun, has fallen back to second overall after finishing sixth in Whistler. Tomass Dukurs (LAT, 568) is third.
