We have been tracking the details of the first-ever Cricket World Cup played in 1975.
The tournament was played in a 60 over format. Most of the important sides in the series had strong bowling as well as batting attacks. On top of that, the fast wickets of England also aided the bowlers. Here are the 5 highest team scores in Cricket World Cup 1975 in which the West Indies emerged to be the world champions.
5. West Indies 291/8 vs Australia
The West Indies side batted first against the Australians in the all-important final match of the tournament at the Lord’s cricket ground. However, the Aussie fast-bowling trio of Dennis Lillee, Jeff Thomson, and Gary Gilmour soon struck big blows and the Caribbean side lost their top 3 wickets for 50 runs. Then arrived the skipper Clive Lloyd and he played the innings of his lifetime. Lloyd scored 102 runs from just 85 balls. His 149 partnership with Rohan Kanhai proved decisive in the match.
The West Indians put a formidable total of 291 runs on the scoreboard. In return, the strong Australian batting line-up fought back but they were all out for 274 runs. West Indies the strongest side on the series had now been crowned as world champions. The team would then again go on to defend the title 4 years later in 1979 under their inspirational skipper Clive Lloyd. Among the highest team scores in Cricket World Cup 1975.
