The sport is globally governed by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG). FIG has its headquarters in the Olympic Capital of LausanneThe sport has five disciplines viz. Artistic, Rhythmic, Trampoline, Acrobatic, Parkour and Aerobic Gymnastics.
The sport include movements contributing to the development of the arms, legs, shoulders, back, chest and abdominal muscle groups.
The sport is played in 146 nations controlled and monitored through their national federations. The sport has been a part of Olympic movement since 1896 making it to be among the oldest sports to be on Olympic Charter.
