Germany and Ukraine kicked off the second match of Group C, the Germans are overwhelming favorites to top the group, but it were the Ukrainians who had the first chance and brought a good save off Neuer to his right. But the Germans were slowly growing into the game, with Toni Kroos starting to dictate the tempo of the game.
The first goal of the game came in the 19th minute, from an unlikely source as S. Mustafi powered a header after a sublime cross from Toni Kroos.
Kroos was once again at hand to create another fantastic opening for S. Khedira who latched on to a fantastic lofted ball from his midfield partner and was denied by a terrific stop from Pyatov.
Soon after came the moment of the match in which Jerome Boateng made a stunning off the line clearance to deny the Sevilla winger Konoplyanka equalizing and getting the match back in the balance.
The half time whistle came at the right time for the Germans as they got a chance to regroup and started asserting their dominance in the second half, with Draxler coming close early in the second half. Kroos was the next person to try his luck with a 25 yard screamer that beat the Ukrainian goalkeeper but clipped the outside of the post and went out.
As the game progressed both teams settled into a pattern of play where Ukraine were trying to create a chance to get a way back in the match while Germany on the other hand had a few chances but Pyatov was on hand to deny the Germans.
As the game drew to a close, Loew made his second substitution of the game by bringing on Schweinsteiger in place of Gotze and the midfielder was immediately on the scoresheet when he was found from a wonderful cross from Ozil and headed it past Pyatov to ensure that the world champions make a winning start to their Euro campaign.
