Kolkata: The Indian Super League is all set to include some real star power in it’s upcoming edition as according to sources, former Bulgarian and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov might end up joining either the ISL champions Atletico De Kolkata or Delhi Dynamos when the fourth edition begins in November.
This confirmed by officials close to his agency who said that they have received offers from the ISL clubs. A source said, “I can confirm that there has been some strong interest from various clubs from the region, but I cannot reveal any names as we are not in advanced talks. Dimitar is in no rush and is currently accepting offers to take a call about his future soon. Right now he has interest from several clubs across Europe as well, hence a move to Asia is something we cannot confirm as of now as well.”
The 36 year old striker last played for Paok FC, a team in the Greek Superlig and netted four goals in the 2016-2017 season.
But his contract wasn’t extended by the club after his performance in the season was analysed. Berbatov, whose current transfer value in $1 million would negotiate with the clubs at a much lower rate since the football season in India is shorter. Also, sources close to Atletico De Kolkata made it clear that they are in search of a striker. Earlier, there were talks that the Sourav Ganguly co-owned side would sign former Ireland international striker Robbie Keane.
The Atletico De Kolkata outfit would have a few changes this season due to a fallout with parent club Atletico Madrid, and one of them is that they would have a new manager in the form of former UEFA Champions League winner Teddy Sheringham.
The defending ISL champions are also in the look out for a central defensive midfielder of foreign origin and are in talks with several European agencies with regard to the same.
